I've been using mpeg2 based DVR solutions for years now (creative and sage). I like the flexibility I get with a standard video format like mpeg2. I can edit it, convert to DVD, Xvid etc. I'm considering building an MCE box now however due to the Xbox 360 extender functionality. But I don't want to lose my ability to convert the video.

What solutions exist (and are popular) for converting the DVR-MS files (un-protected I'm assuming) to something more useful? (Preferably NOT .wmv since my video tool chains don't deal with that very well).

This is a problematic area for me as well. I love my MCE 2005, but I *hate* all of the problems that DVR-MS causes me. :-( There are a few tools listed here:

The truth is, almost no "real" commercial apps deal with MS-DVR very well.

I'm trying out a product right now valled Video Vault:

It's able to work with DVR-MS files very easily. I transcoded a 1 hour TV show to a 320 x 240 DivX file in 40 minutes. It's very useful! They have a few different versions.
