You install your hard drive, connect to your network and you instantly have a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device. Adding the NAS Drive Kit to an Ethernet-based home or office network allows users to share files you download from the internet, music, photos or video. Gain "always-on" access to data, regardless of whether or not other computers on the network are active. Easily add additional external storage to the network. No need to open the PC."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/NAS-806w2.jpg" /><br /><br />Figures, I just dropped almost $500 CND on a 300 GB Maxtor NAS drive. This one looks quite functional, and at $129 USD, it's not terribly expensive. Worth a look for keeping all your music/photos/videos centralized.

This looks great. I couldn't find anywhere on their website whether it takes internal HDs or external HDs.

I have an internal that I would love to disconnect from is computer and network it.

edit:
I found it. Internals.

Its definitely on my list. I'm trying not to order it tonight. Okay, not really trying.

I have a second 60GB hard drive sitting in my old desktop that would use, but get tired of having to always boot it up.

I can upgrade to a large HD later if I wish.

Would something like this be directly picked up by Windows Media Center or the upcoming XBOX360? This would be great to not have to have a windows pc always on to store music &amp; videos for these media players.

The manual says drives up to 250 GB. That's probably not much of an issue today for many of us, but it could be in a year. Also, there is no provision for adding an additional external drive later if you need it. I'd lean more toward an NAS that has an external USB port and will take a second drive.

Yes, you can map MCE 2005 to read external drives (I do it). The Xbocx 360 - I don't think so, because the client software needed for the Xbox 360 to see the hard drive isn't 360 compatible. But you could connect the drive to the 360 over USB...if the drive suppots simultaneous USB and Ethernet access. I need to learn more about it. :-)

Only 1 drive? Make room for 2 drives and an option to mirror your data and I'd buy it in a hearbeat.

$459. Dang, and it's 300 GB, not 400 GB like I thought.
