"It is very difficult to establish a basis to prove a causal relationship between the size of the drop in music sales and the rise of file sharing. Sales of CDs, as well as the success of licensed online music services are likely to have been affected to some degree by a variety of other factors, for example physical piracy and CD burning, competition from other, newer entertainment products and faltering consumer spending in some markets," the report said."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/good_music.jpg" /><br /><br />Personally the reason I think sales are down is that all new music is horrible. Can't anyone come of with an original idea anymore? Where have the Prince's, Velvet Underground's, Roxy Music's and even Madonna's gone?

Well you know it is hard to get a band through the focus groups before the almighty Labels decide to give them a contract. :D

Yeah alot of today's music just sucks. I mean come on, how can you base a song on a sample of a song that's been out less than 2 years. Actually it sucks no matter what year the original was made. Now add ear bleeding compression to make it sound nice and loud and you have a mylar piece of crap.

What!?! Are you suggesting that Britney Spears, and others like her aren't true artists? My God...I am shocked!

No, no, no .. The real reason is that people nowadays have very diverse taste in different genres of music and charts don't mean nearly as much to the people than they did in the past.

While I'm not saying people didn't support smaller bands in the past, indie-music and small label recording has gone trough the roof in the past few years. It's much easier nowadays to do studio quality music in your home, which was - if not impossible - extremely hard a few years back. Plus, internet is a great place to distribute your music - almost half of my iTunes music is gathered from free mp3 sources, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

We are given so much diversity in music nowadays that one can get exactly the kind of music one likes. This is why there never will be something as big as Beatles or Elvis Presley in the future.

And if you really think there's no good music nowadays, you must mean that the mainstream music sucks nowadays. As it does. Do some digging around and you'll find plenty of awesome bands all around the world.

Yes I should've said that Mainstream music sucks. There are many great artists who can actually sing without the power of Antares Autotune and other studio tricks. I just wish we could hear more of the real artisits without having to wade through so much mainstream crap.
