The software, which is currently named iTunes Mobile 1.0, has been in development since last year, when Apple and Motorola announced a joint partnership to develop an iTunes-compatible phone."

Apple is going to face some significant challenges ahead. So far major carriers have given Apple the cold shoulder treatment because each has its own plans to roll out their own music download services that would compete directly with iTunes. Jobs will have to do some serious sweet talking if he hopes to get iTunes mobile in hands of wireless subscribers.

Motorola says its iTunes phone will launch in the second half of this year. The big question on my mind (and probably legions of other Apple enthusiasts) is what will this phone look like? Is it simply a Motorola designed phone running iTunes Mobile, or is it designed by Apple? In the latter case, we can expect this mobile to look distinctly iPod-ish or something cool. If it's designed by Motorola...probably not so much. We'll see.

I personally would hope that Apple is developing a mobile iTunes and not an iPod-phone.

I wouldn't buy a phone just because it plays iTunes music. But I would consider picking up the software for my PPC or Smartphone
