The 5 megapixel, 5x optical zoom camera seems to be a solid mini-SLR, the main drawback being a lack of continuous shooting and auto bracketing. It also apparently doesn’t have an image stablizer and could do with a higher resolution LCD. Retail price is $499.99US."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/2363715482646894.JPG" /> <br /><br />Wonder how these mini-SLRs will do in the future? With the Rebel XT coming out, I hear the original Rebel will still be produced but sold at a lower price. If you can pay a little more and get a true SLR, I think that would be the smarter way to go.

I think this will depend on your usage pattern. People like us -writing and reading on forums- might be better off with a DSLR and some lenses to boot. But people like my DW -who doesn't even know forums like these exist- would prefer a camera with a good automatic feature, and a lens that has a good range from wideangle to decent zoom.

I like the look... but imo if you want a big zoom.. get a big zoom. When I get some cash, I plan to get canons hybrid slr there with the 10x zoom. Name escapes me atm.

Pedantic time!

This is no SLR. It's just your standard consumer level digital camera.

To be even more pedantic, I believe this is a prosumer camera, i.e. one step up from most all-in-one digital cameras.

I like my Canon Pro1 Prosumer camera because it is very compact and offers a compelling package with a 28-200mm equivalent. I don't want to go back to the size of a SLR camera. The best pictures you take, are with the camera you actually take with you.
