While they have all the makings of a top contender in this category, the sound reproduction left much to be desired. Still, with the intended audience being a 30+ year old crowd who travel frequently, and those that have a hard time finding a quiet space, the QuietComfort 2's are a great option. The key to these cans lies in the user's lifestyle."</i> <br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/20050124_2218451.gif" /> <br /><br />I've got to get me a pair. I have a cheap "knockoff" brand (well they are Sony, but they suck) and I still hear the guy in the next row listening to country music.

Can you hear the lyrics also? Or, if the Bose don't really appeal to you, maybe you should go with the Peltor FM Radio (http://www.peltor.se/c_workstyle_fm_radio.htm) and an iRock FM sender (a few bucks from RadioShack). Then you'll definately not hear much from your surroundings -- but it doesn't fit design-wise well in social environments though... :D Although, it is great for the times when you want to play around with something noisy (like, chainsaw, lawnmover...). ;)

As for blocking someone else's music, noise reduction isn't going to help much - it's typically designed to block constant noise (such as the drone in a plane) and typically only below 1000Hz. If you don't want to hear anything around you, closed headphones (as long as they seal well around your ears) or canal phones are what you want.

At $299 some of the best $$ I have spent...

I swear by them. Use them on the plane and occasionally when our 4 kids + friends are destroying each other outside my SOHO office door.

On the plane they not only seem to block the noise of the engine but also the drone / vibration feeling from the engines. It is almost like the engines are off.....

They won't let me wear them on landing though. I assume it is a safety issue in case I do not hear them say "brace, brace, brace" .....
