View Full Version : Nero, You're Killing Me!

About a month ago I was pondering whether or not to stick with Nero Burning ROM (http://www.nero.com/us/Nero_6_Ultra_Editon_Major_Update.html) for my CD/DVD burning, or to switch over to Roxio's Easy Media Creator 7 (http://www.roxio.com/en/products/ecdc/index.jhtml). I'd be using Nero for several years, and liked it quite a bit, but I often found the sheer number of bundled programs to be a bit much. When Roxio wouldn't return my requests for a review copy of Easy Media Creator, and when I found out I could get a free upgrade to the new Nero Ultra Edition 6.6 I decided to stick with Nero. The latest version has some impressive abilities, but there's one thing that I find frustrating: updates.

Regular updates to fix bugs and enhance features make me feel good as a customer, but Nero takes this to an extreme - either by having overly-ambitious programmers or sloppy ones (maybe both). One look at the rat's nest that is their update history log (http://www.nero.com/us/Nero_6_Ultra_Edition_Update_Release_Notes.html) tells me that they prefer a cycle of rapid updates rather than infrequent, major ones. Normally I wouldn't mind, but here's the problem: the updates from Nero aren't small. On average they are between 20 MB and 30 MB in size. The painful part? Nero has extremely slow patch distribution servers. I just finished downloading a new 28 MB patch and went at a plodding 12 KB/s. That's almost 40 minutes just for a patch! And, I kid you not, I've had to do this on several computers several times this week - it's only with this latest round of patching that I've figured I should keep the latest patch on hand.

So Nero? Get some faster servers and get the patching monster under control.

You should switch to BurnAtOnce (http://www.burnatonce.com/). It's free, fast, and has a small file size. I used to be a Nero user but stopped once I used BurnAtOnce.

Oh... Tell me about it.

I downloaded it over my dial-up connection at a *fantastic* 2.3KB/s - well under the average 5KB/s you typically get on the poor connection...

I can't wait for my 1.5Mbps ADSL which is coming in next week. :D

You'll probably be stuck at 12 KB/s, but I guess that's better than 2.5 KB/s.

I ran across the same thing myself a couple days ago and found a solution- copy the file name and paste it into google. The first hit was a list of mirrors- I found the first non-nero link and bam! 200+k/s :D

Heh, you know what's the way to deal with this? Update only when you run into a bug.

I've been using Nero for years and I can't say that I've ever had this problem, but then I always use "FlashGet" which automatically searches alternate URLs to download from and can break up a download into 10 different segments gathering parts of the file from different sources and then combining them to give you the finished file faster then downloading the file serialy from one site.

If you want real ease of use and stable burner give this a shot:

sonic is o.k., but IMO very overpriced, especially when Nero can be got for next to nothing via rebates every so often.

Nero also has (IMO) the most compatible burning engine, it doesn't mind (like Roxio does) if you don't load it's packet software at startup or not...and is just the best for processing CD+G disks for those of us with daughters and Karaoke machines.

Nero upgrades can be a hassle, but I have to say the behemoth just provided fixed a problem with Nero having trouble seeing my Dazzle DCS 200 as an input source.

I just plugged into my 1.5Mbps ADSL a couple of days ago and found that my ISP mirrors the Nero files on their servers, meaning that I can download the updates at a solid rate of ~170KB/s on my connection. Wheee... :D

I'm sorry. I had to rant - but what update is 100+ MB?!

Nero needs to release these updates as updates, not complete reinstallation packages. Bah! :x
