The DRU-540A dual format burner will be priced at about $180. Sony said that the new drive will be able to burn at 12X speeds on 8X media. The ATAPI drive also supports 8X DVD-R and 4X DVD+/-RW burning, as well as 40x CD-R and 24X CD-RW recording speeds."

There has been a flurry of news lately on 12x DVD burners and here is more. The DRU-540A supports DVD +/- R/W but doesn't do dual layer burning so you are still limited to under 5GB of space. Personally, I was looking at the DRU-700 which, even though can only burn single layer at 8x, is capable of burning up to 8.5GB when doing dual layer (albeit at 2.4x). Anyways, if speed is your requirement, the DRU-540A will ship shortly.
