Desktops are easy and cheap to build yourself. If I tried to replicate what they do with notebooks, I'd be in for a lot of work and probably wouldn't save enough money doing it to make it worthwhile. Since these kind of machines are comparable to the desktop counterparts, what's the point of getting a desktop?

...that is unless you build your own desktop, which most people won't do.

They're about 50% less expensive. You can get a decent desktop computer for less than $500 USD, but notebooks are JUST starting to get under $1000 USD now and those notebooks aren't all that great.

When I customized mine to my "personal preferences" it came out to be 7 grand.... :shocked!:

Yeah, I was particularly impressed by Averatec's 3200 series. They offer sub $1K laptops with very nice specs and are in the 4.5lb range. The only problem is that the video cards suck :(.

I think it will always be the case that portable computing (such as laptops) will always cost about 2 times more than an equivalent desktop. With desktops, anufacturers just have so much space to work with.

Sure, there will come the time when you can get a GOOD notebook for around $500, but by then, desktops will cost around $250. Notebook prices will drop as manufacturers start mass manufacturing the small parts for desktops AND laptops. This is a trend that's happening with the hard drive market: they started at 5.25" for PCs, then dropped to 3.5".. soon, I believe that the standard 2.5" notebook hard drive will be so cheap, it will be placed in desktops as well. When this happens, we'll start seeing good, cheap laptops.

"Cheap notebook" and "good for gaming" don't go together. ;-) Hell, even "expensive notebook" and "good for gaming" don't go together - my P5010D was pretty expensive and it has a crappy video card as well - I paid for the small size and mobility.
