Favorite Photographers

Thought it might be fun to discuss some of our favorite photographers.....or at least some of those we've found interesting/inspirational. Sorta in concert with Lee's "Photo 101" (http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,5156&sid=7b2d65a0b41e47ab9852f8e9ad2cdc50) article here on DMT.

Two photographers that I've only recently become acquainted with are Huntington Witherill (http://www.anseladams.com/category.aspx?SID=1&Category_ID=161) and Loretta Lux (http://www.lorettalux.de/).

HW's 'botanicals' are just plaing stunning....and I rarely care for 'flower pics'. Though the link above only seems to have color pics available for viewing, he has some B&W that are equally impressive....a few of which were recently displayed in an issue of Lenswork magazine.

And LL's use of subtle pastel colors is very unique.....at least to me. And though there is apparently a significant amount of manipulation going on here, I can't recall having seen such pastel usage in photography previously....except for some handpainting done over B&W images.

National Geographic and Sports Illustrated are two of my favorite magazines for photographers. Outside of them, I enjoy David Muench (http://www.muenchphotography.com/) and all the other photographers who take part in Arizona Highways (http://www.arizonahighways.com/).

Not liking Adams as a photographer would be akin to not liking Babe Ruth in baseball. :) I think I've got every AA calendar since they started publishing them.

Annie is definitely a classic. In fact, I should just say I admire anyone who can do good portraiture. My 'people pics' just suck.

Don't know Jodie Cobb specifically, but overall I'm a little less enthused about NG photography than I was back in the day.

This is a fantastic question. Unfortunately I have never really kept track of photographers that I really admire, although I am always in awe of the pictures from the National Geographic.

Slightly OT: I do feel slightly bad for top photographers that take pictures of models for magazines/etc. Since a lot (ok, most :)) of the photos get touched up before they get published, I often wonder how much photography skill goes into those pictures. And what about photographers that photograph food. It can be really hard to make all food look really appealing.

Slot canyons have definitely become the 'in' thing for landscape photographers. I was talking to someone recently who had been to Antelope Canyon recently and he said it was a real chore to get any pics without a zillion other people in the composition. Apparently, the place has become *TOO* popular.

Jodie Cobb's pictures sometimes have a whimsical look to them. One I recall was of a professional baseball player (don't remember the name or team though) in the dugout kissing the top of a coach's (or manager's) bald head as he was looking down at some paperwork.
