With the new 8700 (coming) out, I'm contemplating replacing my CoolPix 775. The prospect of 8MP is kind of cool, but don't know that I'd ever need all that resolution. This begs the question about the 5700. Is it still a viable alternative? I know the 8700 has some things improved over the 5700, but if I were to get one, would I be hating life and wanting to trade it in for the 8700?

Longer zooms appeal to me, and while I don't do any/many prints from my 775, I'd be inclined to do more with the others since they're more capable of printing higher quality photos. I used to be an avid photographer, but haven't done much in recent years. The itch never goes away however. :) I'd like a D70 but the size of it doesn't appeal to me and I doubt I'd ever buy more lenses.

The main changes from a 5700

1. More resolution

2. Improved AF and AF assist LED

3. Improved LCD and viewfinder

Oh, of course, it's more expensive, hehe. So it's up to you if you can live without the above 3.

Any ergonomic/function changes? I've read gripes about the 5700 buttons and button layout that were changed/fixed/improved in the 8700. Looking for stuff like that. :)

Hmm, nope, don't think there're any changes there.

remember that a higher pixel count is not always better!

Definitely, which is why I'm even asking the question. :) If there's some reason other than pixel count to go with the 8MP, I won't consider the 5700, but there only seem to be a few differences besides pixels so not sure it's worth the extra dough just yet.

Any suggestions on a quality, longer-life battery for use with the 8700?

MBE-8700 battery grip, and 2 sets of Sanyo AA NiMH batteries.
