The D70 is revealed by Nikon exactly two years since the D100, the D70 appears to share quite a lot with its sibling including a six megapixel CCD sensor and Multi-CAM900 auto focus system. The D70 also appears to have quite a bit going for it which are the primary complaints for EOS 300D owners, flash exposure compensation being one of them."<br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/nikon_d70.gif" /><br /><br />A typically fantastic review by Phil Askey of dpreview.com, this time of the Nikon D70. In addition to the full length review of the camera itself, he has compared it to the Nikon D100 and the Canon EOS 300D. The D70 is the downgraded version of the D100, perhaps just like the EOS 300D is the downgraded version of the EOS 10D. The review concludes with the fact that "it's clear that Nikon were well aware of [the Canon EOS 300D] and had the D70 up their sleeve, a camera which is a significant step ahead of the EOS 300D in terms of build quality and feature set and a match, and in some instances better from an image quality point of view."

In no way is the D70 a downgrade from a D100. Having handled both I can safely say they're very similar in terms of features and operation.

I agree. It doesn't seem like the D70 is a downgrade at all and the review at dpreview seems to indicate this. Looking at the feature set comparison there is very little that the D100 has over the D70. Now if I can just convince the wife that's it's time for me to upgrade my equipment! :)

I just bought a D70 at lunch today. From all the reviews on the net, this camera is a bit better than the Rebel, but not much. My guess is that most people's decision will be a Ford vs. Chevy type decision.

Not really. For starters the Canon 300D is based on the EOS 300, while the D70 is based on the F80. They're already from different segments of each company's camera lineup, with the EOS 300 being in a lower price point.

As such there're a ton of differences in the way both cameras work, and I won't dive into them, suffice to say, I do think the D70 is very much nicer to work with.

Plus I'm biased towards Nikon's UI, so that's another factor to consider. :P

Now that is a nice camera from what I can see. Very nice. Always a fan of Nikon. I haven't used this camera, but I'd sure love to get my hands on one. I love this "sub-$1000" category of DSLR. This is like candy
