The volume of cameras sold was projected to increase by 64 percent to 50 million units. Europe has led this growth, roughly doubling its sales volume each year. In fact, Europe overtook the Americas during 2003 as the world's largest market for digital cameras, accounting for 36 percent of units sold. Growth in the Americas has been strong nonetheless, rising by 48 percent in 2003, while digital camera sales increased by 34 percent in Japan."<br /><br />This is an older news piece from January, but I thought it was worth posting on - it's amazing to see the growth of digital cameras, and the big drop in sales of analogue cameras from 2002 to 2003. It's a digital world!

Geez, they should know better than to use analogue to describe film cameras. They're film cameras!

What's the difference between analogue (atom-based) and digital (bit-based) if not...analogue and digital? :-) I know they're usually called "film" cameras, but it's still based on analogue technology...

Now, unless the world has passed me by, I thought analogue data refers to data stored or transmitted via a continious variable form of physical matter or energy..

Does that mean my books are all analogue books?

Yes. Have you read "Being Digital" by Nicholas Negroponte? If not, I'd encourage you to pick up a copy - great book!

analogue/analog = atom-based matter
digital = bit-based matter

8O The world has passed me by, indeed.

Just to prove that I'm not making this up:

You're right of course that most people call them "film cameras" - but to me, they're analogue...simply because they're not digital. ;-)

Interesting. I also associated analog with frequency based stuff instead of packet based, for example digital signal on TVs vs. analog. I may be wrong though.
