http://www.macnn.com/news/23784

The next popular animated feature film on the big screen may be rendered on Macintosh, according to MacNN. At a recent seminar for Final Cut Pro users, Apple representative Don Peebles let slip that Pixar intends to move its production architecture over to PowerMac G5 workstations running OSX. This makes a lot of sense since the G5 architecture has a very fast data pipeline and massive L2 cache. And RenderMan, the animation software used to create Pixar's animated films, has already been ported to OSX.

I find this story particularly interesting because I can still remember the furor caused more than a year ago when Pixar announced it was moving away from SGI and Sun Workstations to Intel based systems running Linux. Now as Yogi Berra would say, "It's deja vu all over again".

I know someone who does video production work for the state of Wisconsin. They bought 10 loaded G5s last August for production work. 8O

Working for Pixar would have been awesome already because of the cool work they do, but with the G5's there, I think it is icing on the cake 8)

Probably the most interesting thing about this is that THIS IS NOT THEIR RENDER FARM....these are the workstations the artists work on. Pixar recently purchased a grip of Xeon's for their renderfarm so it's doubtful they'll be replacing them anytime soon, however, do expect thanks to the amazing G5 that the next time they do upgrade (probably when G5 hits 3.5-4 Ghz) that the upgrade will be G5's.

I dont see what the big deal is ... they are just upgrading to the latest/gratest. People always make a fuss about companies switching platforms... :?:
