So what are your thoughts on the Coolpix 5000? I have mostly heard good things about it, but is the slow startup time annoying? And I have also heard that the pictures can be fairly noisy with high ISOs. Is this true?

Hey Suhit, what you've just described applies to almost all consumer digital cameras with an extending zoom lens.

Well, the Coolpix 5000 is known to have a slow startup, try it, you'll see what I mean. And wrt noise at high ISOs, at anything near ISO 200 or above, the pictures are noticably bad. I realize this is a typical problem for most cameras in this category, but the Sony DSC-V1 is a nice little camera that has very low noise, even at higher ISO.

I already have, lol. It feels average to me. Noise is the same, ok at 100, crappy at 400 and above.

What do you think of the Sony? I recommend focussing on the noise, or the relative lack of it at higher ISOs. Bad battery life though.

It's pretty decent, but Sony didn't put it out on the market for long. For some reason it didn't become the hit I expected it to be. The noise isn't that much better, I feel. It's there, but it's more even and less coarse so it doesn't seem to be that much. Nikon's tend to have higher red and green channel noise, so it sticks out (and sometimes very badly too).

Oh? I thought the camera was out within a couple of months since its announcement. Well, anyways, I think the reason why it didn't do well is because of its price, it seemed to be a bit on the expensive side for a 5MP (given its feature set).

Anyways, the Sony camera is known for its ridiculously fast auto-focus and its good picture quality. If people are willing to drop $450+, I'd strongly recommend it.

Oh, I meant, it didn't stay in the market for long.

Was it expensive? I thought US$500 is reasonable; given that the G5 and Nikon 5400 cost more.

While you talk about the flaws of the Coolpix 5000, Nikon has already released the 5400. According to reviews it suffers from the same slow startup times and that the V1 was smaller/cheaper/ and the same or better quality.

Hmm, actually I disagree. Nikon, IMO, did a good job with the 5400. They sped up the camera startup, and the camera definitely gives less noisy pictures than its predecessor, making it comparable to the Powershot G5 and the Sony DCS-V1. Additionally, it adds a little more zoom. Overall size is comparable - the 5400 is 0.3" shorter, though 0.3" wider than the 5000; and is definitely lighter. Ultimately, I think it is a good buy (if only it didn't have its AF and slow buffering problems).

didn't the 5400 nerf the ISO ratings.. 5000 was 100-800, 5400 was 50-400.

In any case I think the shortcomings of the 5400 tend to be overhyped (as usual). The only shortcoming I find is the inability to use the WC-63 converter, but I guess most won't care. =P

would you care to explain to us peasants what a WC-63 converter is?

i wanted to trade in my 5000 for the 5400 because of design, but decided not to.
the 5000's placvement of the light meter was idioscy and a terrible oversight onthe design team. they fixed it in the 5400.
I dont have a problem with the slow startup (yet anyways, we'll see how i feel about that when my baby is born and i want that instant shot). the only issue i have with noise is in thefocus and when i want to take a video. you can hear it focus since the mic is build in and is close to the focusing mechanism.

GAry, that is a wide angle adaptor

And that piece of glass gives you a FOV equal to that of a 19mm on a 35mm film camera! Ultra wide angle fun!

groan, babies are not a problem provided your house is well lit. The problem comes when they become hyper active toddlers. ;P

Just a slight correction: that misplacement isn't of a light meter, it's the flash metering sensor.

Correct, the flash metering sensor as the light metering is ton TTL.

Just a question to fellow Coolpix 5000 owners...

Are you all on the latest Firmware?

I updated my 5000 right away when I got it sometime 2002... using FW1.7 which allows me to completely switch off the built-in flash when I use a htoshoe mounted IR transmitter to trigger my 2 Hensel Contra 500's, and my Contra 1500.

Mabuhay!!!

Does ISO 50 have less noise???

If so... this would be good for a studio setup with studio flash equipment.
