It seems they have more than 1 camcorder for each price! Did they introduce new ones without discontinuing old models? It also seems that the new entry level ones are not better than the outgoing ones (except for size)

the DCR-HC85 is looking VERY good right now....although the price is not posted

Sony is certainly not afraid to have a broad product line... ;-)

Hmm, I see different products for different prices. Perhaps their site is in flux right now as the new products have /just/ been introduced and can only be pre-ordered for now AFAICT. There is a very nice variety though.

This is completely common for a large electronics company to do. Since most people buy from retailers, they put similar but different models in a Circuit City and a Best Buy. This makes it real difficult to comparison shop from one retailer to the next, and then they can have some control over the price wars. So, they are actually very smart.

With so many Sony camcorders out, chances are, the general consumer will buy the Sony.

And, even worse, it allows the stores a loop-hole for price matching. "Oh, that's the DSC-855, which is different than the DSC-850, so we can't price match with that other store..."

thing is though....the new dhc (or whatever) entry level cameras are no better (at least at sony's comparison) to the outgoing trv models. Instead of churning out new models every other quarter....cant they make some cost efficient way to make high resolution CCD?
