http://www.trakax.com/software/mobile/

"Free to download, trakAxPC offers a professional-standard studio for Windows desktops that enables the rapid creation of music and video content. Automatic beat-matching for seamless mixing, drag-and-drop editing, and extensive previewing capabilities are among the highlights of a product that allows its users to start producing original and exciting content in their first session. traxAxMobile brings similar intuitive and sophisticated creativity features to the mobile environment. Designed for an extensive range of Windows Mobile devices from leading manufacturers and network providers... Now not only can you enjoy video and audio entertainment on the move, you can also create it using a multimedia interface that scales perfectly to the small screen."

Well lets face it. Chances are we will not see this application win "Most Useful Windows Mobile Standard Application of the Year" award anytime soon, but it sure does look like fun. The best part is, form what I can tell, this is a free download! I know exactly what you're thinking, because it was the same exact thing I was thinking, "what's the catch?" Well it turns out if you really want to create content like a "pro" (and I use that word very loosely) on your favorite Windows Mobile handset, you have to purchase one of their 100 plus loop and sample packs which range anywhere from $1.99 to $5.99 and up. Judging from the video on their site, while this program does look fun and intriguing, video editing is a big enough pain in the rump without paying for the privilege of torturing yourself by doing it on a QVGA screen.

EDIT: There is a slight correction to this story. It turns out that trakAxMobile is not free. I was getting it confused with its desktop PC counterpart, trakAxPC, which would be the free version. While there is a free 7 day trail version of traxAxMobile if you would like to own the full version of this software, it is going to set you back a astounding $29.99! To think, I was complaining about the $5.99 price tag that comes on more than a few of their loop and sample packs...

(Hi - just to introduce myself, my name is Catriona and am part of the HighAndes team, the company behind trakAxMobile).

We understand that people may be slightly dubious of the ability of a PDA/Smartphone to create compelling music and video mixes, however, we believe with trakAxMobile, you can create really sophisticated and fun multimedia creations directly with your device.

As mobile devices develop ever better cameras and video capturing capabilities, users are capturing more of their 'life events' on their mobile. The concept behind trakAxMobile is that it allows users to take these videos and photos, add text, effects, credits, soundtracks and narrations and then create video mixes that combine all these elements and share them online (on YouTube/ Vimeo/ mySpace/ Facebook/ Personal Blog etc.) or simply email them to friends and family. So rather than waiting to get home and upload all your content to your PC and then create a mix, you can be creative whether you are on the train home, waiting for the bus, having a coffee etc. The reality is that currently most content taken with mobile devices ultimately gets left on the mobile device and we are aiming to give users a fun, but practical way, of taking this content and creating something pretty cool to share with others.

In regards to media editing, we are not trying to replicate complex desktop editing with trakAxMobile. Rather we are allowing users to select certain elements of a video or audio track to use in their mix. So, for example, if you are creating a ringtone or CallerID with trakAxMobile, you may want to only use the chorus of your favourite song - using the Audio Editing functionality, you can set new start and end points to select the element of the track that you want to mix.

We have incorporated a Mix Wizard into trakAxMobile and this allows users to tailor the resulting mix to their needs. So if I am creating a video that I would like to share online, I can choose 'Best Quality'. This renders the mix to a high-quality MPEG file, which views pretty well even on larger online video outputs (see for example http://www.vimeo.com/396562). If I would prefer to create a shorter file, suitable for sharing directly from my mobile device, you can choose to settings such as Email, MMS, Free Mixing etc. (all codecs are included with the app).

We hope that you will give the application a shot and that you enjoy the experience. If you/any readers require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me at any time - you should be able to email me directl from my forum profile. Thanks!
