The following models have been announced... HP iPAQ 610: New 12-key smart phone device with scroll wheel... Your business has to keep running when you are on the go. This two-in-one 3G technology mobile phone with GPS navigation and personal organizer helps you run your business single handedly."

Chris Leckness over at Mobility Site has put together a slew of links for all of the new HP iPaq phones! One of the ones that have caught my eye is the HP iPaq 610. From the looks of it, this appears to be one neat looking Smartphone but to be honest, I'm not sure that it is. The spec sheet that I read said it was a Windows Mobile Professional device but the looks and design of this device say something completely different! This is one of those times when I hope the sheets are wrong as I would love to carry this device around. To see more of the upcoming iPaq line, follow the links below!

Meet the iPAQ 900 Series Business Messenger

Meet the HP iPAQ 600 Series Business Navigator

Meet the iPAQ 300 Series GPS

Meet the HP iPAQ 200 Series Enterprise Handheld

Meet the HP iPAQ 100 Series Classic Handheld

I followed the links to photos of the 610 and it is for sure a Windows Mobile 6 Professional phone.

Too bad. I really want a simple to use, replacement for my aging Dash.

I have owned 4 or 5 iPaq's over the years and really appeciate the "Clasic" devices simplicity of the HTC "Classic" devices.

I am now on my 3rd HTC phone and will likely get a 4th soon. -- too bad HP didn't think of including any in this re-launch of their brand.

I saw a mockup with Windows Mobile Professional on it but I often see many Smartphone images of early mockups where the graphic designer added a Pocket PC screencap to the phone instead of the Standard/Smartphone screencap. I'm still hoping one of those iPaqs turns out to be a Windows Mobile Standard device. :D

There's a video out there showing this phone in action and it is a Professional device. I was surprised that there arent any new Standard devices either. Do they think that their initial
smartphone this spring was a good attempt at it.. Not bad, if it would have had a QVGA screen,
but....

Interesting... All of these devices appear as pro devices. But my sources have hinted that there is a couple Smartphone versions. Including a better spec'ed follow up to the messenger we saw earlier this year.

Not sure I get the concern over it being a Pro (touchscreeen) versus Standard (non-touch) device. From the video, it sure looks like HP has done a good job of making it one-handed, with the scroll wheely on the side and that strange but interesting scroll ring on the pad. I understand the promise of one-handedness has fallen a bit short on PPCPE and Pro versions so far. Personnally I would like to see them get that right on a Pro, before I would like to see this device with standard on it. I carry the K-Jam over the SP5 or Smartflip because ther are those times that I want to scrawl a note, or enter something more than a few lines, and thumbing it in, or T9ish is just not my thing.

For most Smartphone users I would think the concern would be the size. It is kind of sized between my K-Jam and Dell X50. Height and thickness of the Dell, but the width of the K-Jam. Little big to be a candybar. Guess well see how it works in practise.

One thing that I noticed is that they do list a 610 and a 610c, the latter having a camera, and the former not. Not a bad decision IMHO with the number of businesses that don't allow photographic equipment. Mine for one.

Probably doesn't get much of a rise here, but I am happy to see some Classic devices being delivered as well. My wife, for one, just doesn't like the converged devices, and she has tried a bunch. Still goes back to her X50 and Razr. The 200 series looks like it will make a decent replacement for the Dell.

For me, it's the touch screen. I like it, but I don't. ;)

I agree, T9 sucks. But I still prefered my T9 to the Wizard because the Wizard was huge in comparison and the phone expereince isn't or wasn't as good.

That's a great point. There are still people that would like to have seperate devices. As much as we like to consolidate it all into 1, others need or like to have things split. I can't recall the last classic Pocket PC that was announced. I stopped caring about those the minute Smartphone hit the market.

I'm happy to some new classic devices as well, while I like Windows Mobile Professional, I have never liked their size when it comes to having a phone built in. I have always felt like a fool holding a huge honking brick to my ear... then again, I felt like a fool owning a MPx220 as well ;)
