This upgrade will definitely keep you busy over the weekend. Do keep us posted on how the upgrade is working out for you, or if it is giving you trouble. In case you are looking for information on Windows Mobile 6 then check out this <a href="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=87622">discussion thread</a> where our readers are talking about the T-Mobile Dash Windows Mobile 6 (leaked version), and check <a href="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13805">this link</a> for the demo created by Microsoft. For the folks who downloaded and installed the leaked version, it seems like official version has the same ROM version but I would recommend that if you have the time then please re-load the official ROM. And finally, thanks to our reader <i>Prosper</i> for spotting this upgrade.<br /><br /><b>Update:</b> Edited the link associated with this post, so that it goes to the main T-Mobile Windows Mobile Upgrade page. Now there should be no confusion about the authenticity of the download. :)

First person who can figure out (or tell me how to figure out) if the "leaked" version i installed a couple days ago is any different than the "official" one released today... let me know! I'm sure there are plenty of others with this same question :)

I forgot to mention this in my main post:

WARNING: This upgrade will wipe all the data in your device's main memory (not the storage card). So please take a backup of all your data. Run an ActiveSync session to have all the PIM information backed up to Outlook/Exchange. Also, make sure that you don't have any files in the My Documents folder (photos/videos etc).

The T-Mobile Web site says that the upgrade can be run on a Vista machine. But I have my doubts. I would recommend our users to use Windows XP machines. And do not use a USB hub to connect your mobile device. Connect the smartphone to one of the direct USB ports.

Happy upgrading! :-)

If you go in to Settings->System Information. The phone will show the ROM version. The number matches the ROM version released by T-Mobile, the number is displayed in the image in the main post.

But as mentioned, if you have the time I would recommend that you upgrade to the officially released version. I can't say there are any advantages, but I think this time you know what all things need to be tweaked and what all programs work; so you can have a clean start and install/tweak the right way. :)

I've been using a Treo 750 lately. This week I switched back to the Dash just to wait for this upgrade.

Now that the upgrade is out, I am stuck at work with no way to upgrade my device for now. Though I did get to download this upgrade at about 2.25MB/sec

The files are the exact same size, but I didn't install the leaked version so don't know for sure. The file properties for both are exactly the same also.

Size: 44721 KB

Several users over at howardforums are questioning if this rom is the real deal...

I really doubt that the link's from Tmobile. It's probably just the same old leaked version othat someone hosted on that site. If you look at Tmobile's statement on the WM6 release on the Dash: "http://www.t-mobile.com/company/PressReleases_Article.aspx?assetName=Prs_Prs_20070 503&amp;title=T-Mobile+Dash+First+in+U.S.+to+Offer+Windows+Mobile+ 6", it clearly states that the upgrade would be downloaded from www.tmobile.com/wmupgrade and it isn't there yet. Give it a few more hours I guess

I don't think this is real. To get the download for the MDA you have to provide your phone number, then get redirected to www.t-mobileapps.com, I imagine for the Dash the procedure and site would be the same, someones playing silly buggers here.

I don't understand this link... this contradicts everything that Tier 3 told me and said "he was trained on" is this a link to the same file that has been going on.. because I was told by manager of Tier 3 that "it is not the file we are releasing tomorrow and not the file we trained on... I know what was leaked and that was a premature beta"

Don't know if these guys are right, but you would expect that their be a link within the T-Mobile site so that when you pulled up your dash under My T-Mobile you could get to the download.

I may call them later this morning and see what's up.

Here is the Whois information:

The site is owned by T-Mobile.

I agree that there should be a direct link from http://www.t-mobile.com/wmupgrade/. It seems to me that the page has not been updated yet.

It is done. I now have Windows Mobile 6 on my dash and I love it. No more XT9 bugging me. It's a worthwhile upgrade and kudos to Tmobile and Microsoft for getting it out and making it free!

Despite warnings of not installing the update using Vista, I did it anyway.
I had a successful install of WM6 on my Dash!

Looking forward to checking out the new features.

I upgraded my Dash with no problems. I use the phone on Cinglular. After the upgrade, I was able to make calls right away. But, as I assumed, my internet access was gone. I found the setting that I used under WM5 to get my Dash on the Internet under Cingular (http://www.howardforums.com/archive/topic/1030851-1.html) but they did not work. I was able to set up the everything but the MMS account settings.

Has anyone been able to get thier upgraded Dash to work on Cingular. BTW I am not using the $5.99 data plan but rather the ~$20 plan.

Any help would be great.

Is the T-mobile WM6 upgrade for me?
Or should I wait for HTC to release WM6 upgrade on their Website?

I have noticed another issue with the upgrade. Even though I have my mail accounts set up properly and set up to automatically check every 10 minutes, they are not doing so. Regardless of whether I tell it I have to click to send and receive, I still have to click to send and receive.

I don't have this problem. I have a Hotmail account set up for 2 hour sync. One IMAP set for 15 minutes and one POP setup for 2 hour. And of course an Exchange set up for direct push. Could it be because of aggressive polling interval of 10 mins? Have you tried changing it?

I think I figured it out...

are you roaming? even though T-Mobile has free roaming the email by default will not sync if your roaming.

go to your account settings and when you get to the Automatic Send/Recieve click on the Advance Settings.

Check the box that says "Use automatic send/recieve schedule when roaming"

that should take care of it for you.

So, it looks like I am not going to change my leaked upgrade to the official one, unless someone finds anything different in the official one. Just got off the phone with my wife, who works in Data Device Tech Support @ T-Mo, and she cant stress enough to back up ALL your data before you start!!! She spent the whole day trying to help people who rushed through the warnings, upgraded, and lost all their contacts. Take the time and do it right.

Something I just noticed that I hadn't seen anyone else mention is that it looks like the Live Search for Windows Mobile is in ROM - it's a "must have" app for me so it's nice to have it not taking up storage memory.

Yeah, well it still takes me to the all phones page! Can't get to the actual update site. Which is okI guess, since I'm having a time trying to sync my contacts with outlook 2003. the activesync manager says that the profile is wrong. I added another profile with my dash profile name to outlook and it still isn't taking. :(

I'd really hate to lose my contact database. Can I transfer the files from the contact folder to a folder on my memory card? I use vcomm's PowerDesk 5, I prefer it to windows explorer.

I've dragged and dropped music files from pc to memcard that way, I should be able to do the same to my contacts and reverse it once WM6 actually is installed, shoulnd't I??

Ok, let me amend that. yes the link takes me to a T-Mobile page that shows me the Dash and MDA with links under both pics to get the software now. Then it takes me to the all phones page. Now, when the link is clicked, it tells me my phone is not a valid t-mobile number!! Might be because the site is undergoing routine maintenance. I'll check again later.

This software release includes:
– Operating system upgrade to Windows Mobile 6, including features such as:
– Receive, compose, and send e-mails in full HTML.
– Easier downloading of e-mail attachments and images.
– Improved e-mail filtering and search.
– Access to Windows Live services.
– Improvements to volume controls:
– Adjust volume by sliding your finger up or down the volume strip while in a call.
– Pressing and holding the bar no longer rejects incoming calls.
– Ability to dial by number by pressing alt+letter for each letter in the phone number.
– Voice Command software, allowing not only easy voice dialing but also control of applications and messages. Please refer to the User Manual for details.
– Pocket Office, allowing editing of Microsoft Word and Excel documents from the device.

This improvement to volume control, does the jogr strip still drive us mad by inconsistant volume levels? Or has anyone even thought to turn it back on yet?? lol

this does seem to work much better. Before you had to tap it either up or down and there seemed to be spots where it would either work or not.

This sliding from top to bottom, or bottom to top seems to nail it every time.

now the question becomes, how often is my ear going to do the same thing?

Sliding action I am sure works better and is safer compared to tap. The tap action used to drive me nuts because it would always change the volume because my finger would just touch the strip. But the slide action is much better.

BTW thanks for mentioning the slide action. I was wondering why the volume cannot be changed. Now I know - I was tapping instead of sliding.

I have a weird problem. My Reminders don't play the sound, the phone just vibrates even in Normal. The Normal profile has reminders setup for "Play Sound." And the Sounds section has "New_Reminder" sound selected, but I hear no sound. Infact if I go into the Sounds settings and change the sound type from New_Email to New_Reminder, it doesn't playback the tone, not even when I press Play from Menu. Strange! :? All the other tones play, I mean for Ring Tone, New e-mail etc.

Anyone else have this problem or know what the deal is?

I tried that setting also and still can't get email to autosync. I am using the $5.99 data plan. This is driving me crazy.

I also noticed a couple of other things. People say they have had to app unlock their phones again. I did not have to. I wonder if that is becuase had had done the SIM and CID unlock on the Dash before.

Kris Kumar
05-06-2007, 02:36 PM
Application unlock is different from the SIM and CID unlock. App unlock lets you run un-certified apps with full power or without any security restrictions. Some user including myself have used it to disable the T-Mobile MyFav application in the Windows\Startup which I believe is responsible for home screen switching and also sending an SMS message everytime the phone powers up. (I am not on Cingular, so this SMS message was bouncing back, got pretty annoying)

Can you run task manager and see how much memory you have?

I am sure by now you have tried disabling all email account but one for auto sync, and checked to see if it sync.

In the Account Settings->where Outgoing server is specified->Advanced Settings has a selection for Internet connection. I don't think this is a problem because you can get emails when you do send/receive. Also I think the $5.99 is not the problem because manual sync is working.

For whatever it is worth can you go into Settings->Error Reporting and turn it on. Hopefully you will see an error message during the next sync time. Usually the crashes go un-indentified. This should help catch it.

Kris Kumar

Folks who are on Cingular, I mean using the Dash on Cingular:

- The Dash works with the WM6 upgrade. All the features including MMS
- Delete all the connection settings related to T-Mobile and create new ones for Cingular using this post.
http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7092
- For MMS: Go into Text/Multimedia Messages -> New -> MMS->Menu->Options->Message Options-> ( are you still with me :-) ) Menu->MMSC Settings. Delete the T-Mobile setting and add one for Cingular using the settings in the above link.

- The Dash sends an SMS message upon power on, I am positive it is for MyFav. I had to application unlock the phone. And then go in to Windows\Startup using a program like Total Commander and rename the MyFav related .Lnk file to .Ln2 or something other than .Lnk. This is so that Windows cannot launch it at power on. Reboot your phone. (This trick should also fix the home screen issue for those who are on T-Mobile.)

I know about the purpose of the Application Unlock. And I was surprised that I did not have to do it. I re-installed several unsigned apps and had no problem with them running at all without going through the app unlock procedure first.

I have also enabled the error reporting on the Dash.

When I boot the Dash for the first time, at some point it will go out and check for email for all of my accounts. I have two Comcast accounts and one Gmail account set up. It will download all of the email with no problem. The issue is that it won't ever go out and get any more even though I have it set to check every 10 minutes. So at least I know the connection is good. It just won't go out and re-check.

Likewise for me. I've had to do the "app unlock" dance many times with many devices, including the Dash, so was fully expecting it to happen again with this upgrade. However, everything installed just fine - signed and unsigned alike. I wonder if T-Mo decided to relax their security model on the device a bit?

Anyone noticed that "sphere effect" or whatever that white thing they put on the MyFavs icons. It's kinda irritating, and hoping someone can tell me how to get back to just the normal no effect kinda thing.

Anyway, this upgrade is great. The best one for is the "Encrypt" SD card function. I have lots of sensitive docs I carry on my phone, and I used to manually lock it with 3rd party apps everytime for security reasons, but now it happens on the fly, and I'm loving it.

Oh, and I know it's pretty obvious, but the encryption wont happen if your files is already on the card. I have to format my card, and transfer my data using activesync, and now it's encrypted.

Thumbs up for T-Mo!

Hey all, I spent an hour talking to a tier-3 tech support guy at T-Mobile who not only helped me figure out that thanks to microsoft's cleverness in WM5 programming, the 'Contacts' folder simply isn't accessible from the file explorer on the Dash as I had wanted to drag and drop it to my pc as I had with the other folders to back everything up before the big change!.

He also told me that T-Mo has taken the link down to the WM6 upgrade :( and it should probably be restored later this month.

The tech a tier below him had mentioned that she had been on the actual site a couple hours previous to our conversation and couldn't understand what was happening. The tier-3 explained that it was probably an upper level decision based on id security. Makes sense to me.....I guess.

Anyway, that's why we get to the All Phones page

So, all you who actually have the official upgrade....congrats!!! The rest of us'll just have to wait I guess.

I was able to get the WM6 upgrade from T-Mo's site a few minutes ago. I could not do so using IE7, though. I had to use FF.

So far this seems like a good upgrade except for the Voice Command bugs.

Ooo I tried it out with official version only. Very neat. What concerns me is that when I hold down HOME in either silent or vibrate mode, my smartphone emits very audible squawking noise. Seems like I can't trust my smartphone to be quiet any more. )-:

Wat exactly did you get when you pressed and held the home key? When I do it a little microphone shows up on the upper right corner of the screen. Is that voice notes or voice command?

That is the Voice Command. If it were notes, the whole screen will get refreshed and you will see a screen with title "All Notes," Record and Menu has soft key options.

BlackBerry upgrade??

If you are interested in purchasing the BlackBerry® device, call T-Mobile at 1-866-464-8662 or find a T-Mobile business representative near you.

The upgrade process is easy!

1. Download the new Windows Mobile Handheld Software to your PC.
2. Ensure ActiveSync is installed on your PC. If you have not installed ActiveSync, you can install it from your Getting Started CD or download it from the Microsoft website.
3. Connect your T-Mobile Dash to your computer using the USB Sync Cable that came with the phone.
4. Establish an ActiveSync connection. You will know this is complete when the ActiveSync icon in your PC taskbar is lit green and the status is "Connected".
5. Ensure that your T-Mobile Dash has a battery charge that is greater than 50% (Two bars)
6. Run the Windows Mobile Handheld Software program you downloaded from your PC and follow the on-screen commands.

1. Below is the list of available downloads. Please select the download of your choice.

T-Mobile Dash Software Updates
T-Mobile Dash Software (Version 1.22.531.4)

Then I'm redirected to this page:

Please read through the information below before you authorize the download.
Download For: T-Mobile Dash
Download: T-Mobile Dash Software (Version 1.22.531.4)
Date Updated: 5/4/2007
Size: 45 MB
Notes:
To find the the Handheld Software version:

1. From the Home Screen, press "Start"
2. Select "Settings"
3. Continue selecting the "More" option until you see "System Information"
4. Select "System Information"
5. Check the ROM version. If your device software version is not 1.22.531.4, it is highly recommended that you download and install this software.

NOTE:

1. Please be aware that installing this update will erase all data stored on the device, restoring the Dash to factory default. Be sure to back up any important files to your desktop or a storage card to preserve your data.
2. You must have ActiveSync 4.5 (Windows XP) or the Windows Mobile Device Center (Windows Vista) installed in order to continue synchronizing with your PC after the upgrade. You can download this software free of charge from the Microsoft Device Synchronization website.

Then I'm redirected to download the Activesync 4.5 which I already have. No link to the actual download of WM6!!!

The last page that is taking you to the ActiveSync download page. The page that shows the Dash software version and size etc, well that page has a button labelled "Download" at the bottom of the page. You have to scroll down to see it. It is below the link for ActiveSync (the red text). If you are not seeing it then please try a different computer. I just tried it and was able to get to it.

Thanks Kris!!! I was able to download the software from my mom's pc in adjacent room. Copied it to my flash drive and installed it from my pc, after virus scaning it first. Now it's coldbooting.

Now comes the fun part, putting my apps back in!! Thankfully most of the are from the SMT store and I have the keys to unlock them.

Here's to the future!!

not having any of those problems here. Sounds like you have a third party program that is giving you problems.

maybe do a clean install with the new rom and then load your programs on one at a time until the problem reappears.

Ok folks, I've a slight problem with reinstalling Handy Weather. Upon re-entering the registration code, I'm told that the program was registered on another device! Sound familiar? Kinda like WinXP not recognising some programs after the pc's internal configuration has been changed.

Once again, Help!!!.....lol Thanks folks.

is your owner informatin exactly the same as before? That's what most software looks at to verify it's the correct machine.

You'll need to contact the developer and let them know your situation. It sounds like they lock the registration to something specific on the device and a hard reset has changed that. One thing to check is that your Owner Info is the same as it was before. Otherwise, you'lll need to contact the developer. Sorry :(

I'm having the same issue. I've reset the device. Tried as many combinations of profile and sounds settings as I can think of and I still hear nothing when selecting reminder sounds in the Sounds section. I also just get a vibration when an actual reminder takes place. This has happened from the moment I udpated my dash to WM6.

Did anyone ever track down the cause or a fix?

I am still suffering from this issue. I was getting worried that I was the only one. I might be re-loading the update just to see if I can resolve this issue. I will post here if it fixes it.

Surprised that not many are complaining about this? :?

Sorry to insist, guys, but nobody answered my question...

My carrier is Orange. I have a plain HTC S620, not a T-mobile Dash.

What if I install the T-mobile upgrade to WM6?

If not, when will those be available?

Theoretically the upgrade will work. But practically speaking I believe the upgrade tool checks the smart phone version, it can tell that the device is not a Dash but S620. And therefore stop the upgrade process.

Good question. We haven't heard any announcements. And the Dash product page on T-Mobile's Web site doesn't show the Windows Mobile version. :?

I'm curious to know how those of you (like me) who use the Dash on Cingular managed to download the upgrade. It requires a valid T-Mobile phone number. Did you use a friends number, or did you use the leaked version? Or is there a mysterious third way I should know about?...

Without a valid TMO number you can't download so I'd say Cingular customers are using the leaked version. I did perform a little experiment just to see what would happen and as with everything there is always a way around things. Altough I didn't need to downlaod it again I was able to get to the download page without using my TMO number.

I was surprised when my number worked because I am not a T-Mobile customer. At first I thought it was because I was an ex-TMo customer who had ported the TMo number to Cingular. It was only later that I realized that when I had purchased the Dash at the store (yes, I am one of those guys who paid retail price without service) they had asked for my phone number. The system needed "a" number for the purchase. So that is how my number is associated with the Dash. So in case you bought the Dash direct from the store then you too must have number associated with it. If you bought it from Ebay then you are probably out of luck.

I got this answer from HTC Europe (sorry if this is already known):

Xx April 2007

Windows Mobile 6: upgrade strategy statement

Microsoft recently unveiled Windows Mobile® 6, which offers improved usability and more PC-like functionality than previously available. Enhancements include the ability to view emails in rich HTML format, and to manage emails quickly and easily through new shortcuts and new calendar views.

The HTC S710 is one of the first Windows Mobile® 6 devices to ship, and will be followed by a range of products based on the new operating system in the coming months.

HTC is also offering WM6 upgrades for the most popular devices in its current range. This includes recently launched “messaging” products, which will enjoy the greatest benefits of Windows Mobile 6, such as the HTC Advantage, the HTC TyTN, the HTC S620, and the HTC P4350.

The upgrade will also be available for the award-winning HTC P3300, plus some of our operator-branded devices.

The upgrades will be rolled out from June, in line with our operator partners’ strategies.

You’ll be able to find the latest releases as they’re made available at: http://downloads.europe.htc.com

Folks who are on Cingular, I mean using the Dash on Cingular:

- The Dash sends an SMS message upon power on, I am positive it is for MyFav. I had to application unlock the phone. And then go in to Windows\Startup using a program like Total Commander and rename the MyFav related .Lnk file to .Ln2 or something other than .Lnk. This is so that Windows cannot launch it at power on. Reboot your phone. (This trick should also fix the home screen issue for those who are on T-Mobile.)
Kris, could you please specify which MyFav LNK you renamed? The only one I found was "My5MsgCenter.LNK" which I cannot delete or rename with Total Commander.
