This is a big topic, so I'll cover what I can and then see what questions come back. I'll either answer those questions in the comments or I'll do a second entry. ...Originally SD stood for "Secure Digital," but no one ever did anything with the "Secure" part. The name stuck, even if the meaning didn't. All types of SD cards are based on nand flash memory and are used for storing data. Think of them as very small, very low power hard drives with no moving parts. SD, MiniSD, and MicroSD (aka TransFlash) are all the exact same thing, just in different packaging. Smaller packaging means less space taken on your phone, which enables smaller phones. Yes, it annoys me too that every new phone I get seems to need a new, smaller version of SD. The good news is that I don't think we can get much smaller. You practically need tweezers to insert a MicroSD already. If they get any smaller, we're going to need a magnifying glass to even see them."</i><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Jerry-SD.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><br />This is a great article covering the basics of SD cards. How they work and the names they are given are also touched on so give it a read.

The chart I want to see would be a table of devices, and then the max-usable speed. For example - it took lots and lots of searching to figure out that any card ~38x or better would work for the SD600 camera I'm getting. If necessary I don't mind paying extra for a 133x card, but if the preformance in the device is exactly the same as a 60x card why pay the difference. Only a small parenthetical comment in one of the manuals appendix gave the transfer rates for various movie modes in KB/sec (1920), and individual picture size(2720K) per shot*burst speed (2.1). So at most 5712KB/sec worst case. I then had to translate that into the nnX that the cards typically spec (150K/Sec for 1x) = 38.08x.

I bought 50x memory.

I guess I should look at the S2IS I have and make sure it has fast enough memory.

All Canon said directly was use our "HighSpeed" card to get the rated performance.

I don't have a clue if there is a max-usable speed for my AXIM or 2125, and I guess I don't have enough cards to graph/measure this before I buy.
