Sure enough, the USB Implementers Forum has recently announced that we loyal consumers will all be shelling out a few extra bucks as new mobile handsets, PDAs, and digital cameras adopt a new, smaller "micro-USB" adapter for syncing / charging."</i><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Jerry-USB.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><br />Apparently this is not the adapter we have already seen on the likes of the 3125 but I'm not sure. From the article it looks like something we are going to see. There is no point lamenting this. Even though the three (so far) SD card formats made us huff and puff, we all ran out and bought them anyway. I have dealt the music buttons. Together we will get through this!

I am all for standards, I think it is a step in the right direction. This would mean that instead of everyone trying to come out with proprietary connectors, would in future be able to adopt this one. Wish the USB alliance had thought of this couple of years ago. The companies (like HTC) may have already invested resources into their own connector designs and may not adopt this standard.

I wouldn't count on it. MiniUSB is already small enough to use with cellphones and companies like HTC, Motorola, and Nokia to name a few still use their own proprietary connectors. Standards are nice but until everyone uses them the word "standard" will mean nothing. With the introduction of this new smaller USB port it will do nothing more than bring more division in the market unless companies are forced to use only one type of connector. And we know that is not going to happen because everyone will have a reason to use their own connector.
