Just 1 day after the Dash hit the streets, <i>akil, staulkor, and some others</i> over at Howard Forums has found a way to change the functionality of the volume jogger on the Dash to include scrolling and launching programs. You'll need to modify the registry to get this to work. So, make sure you back things up before making any changes. Here are the changes you need to make to get this working. <br /><br />To Enable Scrolling:<br />• HKCU\ControlPanel\JogBar\Settings\SwitchToAudioFunc = 0<br /><br />Tap on Bottom Key Launches IE Mobile:<br />• HKCU\ControlPanel\JogBar\Settings\BottomKeyApplicationName = \Windows\iexplore.exe<br /><br />Tap on Top Key Performs Back <br />• HKCU\ControlPanel\JobBar\Settings\TopKeyApplicationName = BACK <br /><br />You can replace any these with your favourite applications. Other common applications would be START (to Launch the Start menu), \Windows\tmail.exe to launch Outlook Mobile, or <a href="http://www.SmartphoneThoughts.com">http://www.SmartphoneThoughts.com</a> to launch IE Mobile with your favourite website ;) Let us know how you make out!

Hey, be glad for little things. At least it was just a UI change and not a hardware change. :D

This is awesome, I wonder why T-Mobile took away the functionality, it seems pretty easy to use and has some neat features built-in such as the speed controlled auto-scroll (slide your finger up or down, then immediately do the same motion but then hold your finger in place, it will auto-scroll and the speed can be controlled by how far up or down you hold your finger).

Jerry's right - T-Mobile (And OEMs for that matter) have a long and strange history doing what they believe is best for the consumer. It almost never is, but heck, they think it is.

I'm just glad that my new Dash will get more use out of the scroller than just for mundane volume junk. Now if I could only get John Cody's Alerts to work (the software works, the registration scheme doesn't), I'd be a happy camper.

Yeah, I've been working with John on fixing this - it doesn't work on the Samsung i320 either. :( Hopefully soon, but he's a little distracted with this Handango thing right now. ;)

I bought the HTC version of the dash (S620) and have been using it for the past 4 days. It actually comes with a control panel to set what functionality you want the 'joggr' (as they refer to it) to have. Volume control on every screen or just volume control in calls and windows media player only or scrolling functionality instead.

Out of the box it is set to scroll and I actually found that I don't like that setting at all. Reason being is because with the device being so small (which I love by the way...), there are only so many places you can hold on to it and you will find yourself constantly inadvertently touching the joggr area of the phone and doing things that you don't want it to!

I've set mine to only adjust volume when I'm on a call and when I'm using WMP.

Grass is always greener but... personal thing I guess.

Hi Mike,
This might sound a stupid question but I’d appreciate if you can tell me how to access the register on Smartphone so that I can make the change that you listed below? I really need to enable JogBar/Volume function on my Dash

To Enable Scrolling:
• HKCU\ControlPanel\JogBar\Settings\SwitchToAudioFunc = 0

Tap on Bottom Key Launches IE Mobile:
• HKCU\ControlPanel\JogBar\Settings\BottomKeyApplicationName = \Windows\iexplore.exe

Tap on Top Key Performs Back
• HKCU\ControlPanel\JobBar\Settings\TopKeyApplicationName = BACK

Thanks for your help in advance!

You need a registry editor like the one that comes with Resco Explorer. (http://www.resco.net/smartphone/explorer/default.asp) There are some free ones floating around too. Maybe Mike remembers which ones.

Go to http://1800message.com/products.aspx and download the SetJogBar utility. It allows you to disable xT9 (most of the time) and allows you to set the top and bottom apps for the jogbar using a reasonable ui.

enjoy!
