View Full Version : New phone time - 2125 or 8125

As documented elsewhere (http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=76070#76070), I have the opportunity to buy a new phone. Because I bought the BB PSP, I can get anything on Cingular.

I've done the Smartphone thing for a couple of years now, and I haven't had much luck with keeping them running. I'm thinking about going for the 8125, but thought I'd check here first for recommendations.

I've always been a "phone-first" guy, and I don't use a data plan because it was too much of a pain to type an email on the 2125. I might add one on if I get the 8125, but it looks like it's more expensive for the 8125?

Can anyone speak to the ease of using the 8125 as a phone? How is it to dial? Is the sound quality decent without using an earpiece? Does it break the second you drop it (I'm a bit clumsy at times with the phone)?

Thanks in advance!

(Yes, I searched first)

The 8125 is basically a kJam, right? My wife uses a kJam and she really likes it. I personally, am not found of touch screen devices any more. I find it slow and awkward to have to dig out that stylus when you try and do things. Sure, you can use your finger but then you end up with smudges on the screen and it's hard to get an accurate push when you have big fingers. Not that mine are biggies. But they're not as small as my wifes either. Anyway, she hasn't had a single problem with it, but then again, I haven't had any crashing problems with my SP5m either. ;)

Does that help at all? Yeah, I didn't think so.

A lot of the people at my work have the 8125's and they said they're "ok" because a lot of the issues the previous poster mentioned.

The dialer is obviously touch screen so try doing that in the sunlight without the stylus ;)

I personally went with the 2125 because if you're into the data usage on your phone you can't get the unlimited medianet with the 8125, it's viewed as a PDA so you have to pay the $40/month instead of the $20 for medianet on a smartphone.

Personally, I'm holding out for the 3125 (Qtek 8500), which will be a flip phone. 8)

If you're looking to use it as a phone first, with the back-up of WM 5.0, then you may want to consider that as well. :?

I am a self declared expert on this issue as I have both devices.

If I could only have one it would be the 2125 now. I used to say I would only keep the 8125 but as Mike pointed out. Needing two hands to do most things is a pain.

The call quality of both are fine. The dialing (8125) is a pain. It is just not a phone first. If you are going to use it more like a PDA then you will be happy. if you are going to use it more like a phone then its gotta be the 2125.

yup, gotta be the 2125. in fact, there have been some reports that people these days prefer smartphones over ppc's and laptops... i would be one of those. read more about it here (http://wmsmartphone.blogspot.com). hope this helps your decision. ^_^

i would say hold off for the 3125. right now there are to many problems with the new 2125 rom for me to suggest anyone using it unless they used a different rom, which i don't suggest either ;)

I don't get you smartphone guys. How do you play shanghai, scribble notes quickly, watch a movie on that postage stamp (very clear postage stamp, but nontheless) ;) I too have both an SP5 (essentially 2125 guts) and K-Jam (8125ish). Both are super units, but I have always been a PDA guy. The PDA side get 90% of the use for me. When I carried a phone and PDA, same thing...BUT...if I could only carry one thing, it was the phone. When you need it, you need it, and having a PDA didn't help. I really prefer my Axim for size, speed, etc, but the K-Jam is a good compromise as a single device, for me. VoiceCommand works pretty well for avoiding the touch screen phone pad.

So the answer is not which one is better, but whether one is better than the other for you.

BTW, my wife is using a SmartFlip on Cingular. Just dropped her SIM (from RAZR) into it, used iMate's configuration cab and it's good to go.

Thanks for the feedback!

I got the 8125, and I have to say that, after some tweaking, I'm really liking it! I've got it almost entirely one-handed for normal use. Messing with settings, of course, requires the stylus. However, I've gotten used to the larger (2x) screen (for movies) and the keyboard (for email/web).

I've realized that I never dial numbers manually - 95% of the time I use the speed dial. Granted, it's a few clicks (Send | Up | scroll to name) instead of holding down a number key or two, but it's certainly do-able.

Plus, with the keyboard, I can actually use the data plan! I couldn't type anything on the 2125.

It's definitely a PDA first, but I think I might be ready to try that out for a while. I have 30 days to return it, so the 3125 might be out by then. If so, I'll check it out.

I am in a similar situation. I have had my Nokia 6620 for a couple years now and am looking to break into the WM scene. I saw the 8125 and thought to myself this is the device I have gotta have.

When I initially got my 6620 I wanted to use it as a PDA. But what I soon discovered was that with out a stylus or keyboard I was really never going to type much into the phone other than a text message.

While the 6620 had a bunch of capabilities, I found myself never using it. It ended up just being a phone. The excuse I used to buy it was to "get organized". It never happened... I am hoping the 8125 is the convergence of phone/pda i am looking for.

Before I run to the Cingular store and pick one up, does anyone know if the next iteration of the 8125 is due anytime soon? Any other phone models I should wait for?

If so maybe I should just wait. I will be tied down another two years and 300 bucks poorer if I get it, which I am willing to do. I just hate it when I buy something and the next version comes out a few weeks later.

The main requirements for me are 1)touch screen stylus interface 2) wifi 3) WM OS

Thanks for any input!

Well, you might be better to ask about upcoming Pocket PC devices on our sister site, Pocket PC Thoughts (http://www.PocketPCThoughts.com). ;) As far as I know, and I don't really play in the PPC arena too much anymore, there's the Hermes that is just about to be released. But other than that, there's not much. But I'm not 100% on that.

Bah! Is HP still trying to make devices? They haven't done anything great since the old ipaq line. IMHO. ;)

Ugh - I wish you hadn't told me that! Now I have Hermes envy...

Speaking of Hermes(or HTC TyTN), that looks to be the next version of the Wizard. With a 400mhz processor maybe I will hold out for that. I also saw that it will be offered soon by Cingular here:

Anyone know if this is true? If so when?

Thanks again

Nice page you found there. Looks like it's called the hw6925 not 6950 like I posted above.

I don't know when it's coming, but I can't wait! Engadget Mobile has a product release chart that suggests it's soon (since the StarTrek is supposed to be out within a month).

Thanks for the link. That gives me reason to hold off a few months. I have another post on pocketpcthoughts. If anything interesting is posted i'll post it here.
