By the end of December 2005 that figure had reached 2.14 billion and is well on the way to reaching 3 billion before the end of 2008. ... WCDMA is really starting to ramp up and 2006 is looking like "The Year of the 3G Phone". At the end of 2004 there were 17.3 million 3G subscribers, and by the end of 2005 there were 42 million WCDMA subscriptions: a Year-on-Year growth rate of 142%. By the end of 2010, there will be 1 billion 3G subscribers milling around the world, which will equate to 30% of the global subscriber market. 3G has come of age and it looks like we are on the cusp of another boom period, but there are uncertainties as to how the 3G market will evolve. When will 2G-only handsets be phased out of the market for developed economies such as Western Europe, Japan and the US? Will TD-SCDMA increase or decrease the price elasticity curve for 3G adoption in China? Will stripped down 3G systems be deployed in emerging markets? Will the current boom in handset replacement rates keep up, or could they fall to potentially 2001-2002 levels? Will mobile WiMAX disrupt the cellular business model?"</i><br /><br />Those are some interesting questions; I don't know the answers but do know the answer to this question - When will I phase out my 2G handset? The answer is - before the end of 2006. ;-)

i voted 2007 but im sure we wont see them start to phase things out, at least in the US, until there is a reliable blanket of 3G coverage throughout the nation, which might not be until late 2007/2008 or even 2009.

One out of my two current phones is 3G, and I'm sure I'll replace my 2G phone by summer. Most of the more advanced phones in Europe are 3G, so it doesn't take much thought as to whether to get one.

But without flat-rate data rates, 3G is pretty much useless in the UK. :(

Sadly, I'm sure my current phone won't last the year. Not becuase it's not any good, just that I know I'll buy something else before long.

I am keeping my fingers crossed; hoping that Cingular will extend the 3G coverage to include my city by at least Q4 2006.

Since I get new phones about every 6 months or less it's a mute point.

lol, i usually grab new smartphones within a month of them coming out. what makes matters worse is since i work for cingular i have to see and play with the phone everyday until i break down and buy one lol.
