According to my source at HTC the upgrade is for testers who have earlier, pre-production ROM versions on their phones. The upgrade takes the phone to version 1.8.42.14 which is what I already have on my phone. If you want to check your phone go to Settings and then System Information. You will see the OPERATOR version there.

My 2125 arrived from Cingular a few days ago and it has the current ROM too. FYI

if you browse around that site it looks like they give you a free copy of clearvue suite for free too, you would think they would require a username and password before downloading something like that

It probably will only install on 2125 though.

Anyone want to advise me whether or not I can install this OS onto my SP5m?

I would imagine that you can't. But, it's not like I've attempted it or anything. Just a guess.

Isn't it already WM5?

Yes, but there are always differences between vendors and builds. For what it's worth, I think iMate already has a minour ROM upgrade available on their site.

How much difference could there be?

Well, a fair amount actually. The carriers can do a fair amount of customization -the Caller ID Issue (http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,9849) is a prime example. I don't know if it's any different on the 2125, but it's something that's left for the vendor to customize. Same goes for various other settings like Cache, program memory allocation, etc...

Awesome..congrats.

But the 2125 does not have Wi-Fi...and SP5m does. So won't that be a downgrade for you. :?

Okay when I first saw the post, I was excited. But then I read Jerry's statement about how this version of ROM is the same as the one I have on the Smartphone.

I do see some problems with the data radio stack. Since it tries to persist an EDGE connection (just like with GPRS), when I switch cell towers or in areas with low signal, once I get an error, I have to end the EDGE session (by double clicking the hang-up key on the home screen and make sure the little E is gone). Then life is back to normal. Slightly annoying. I remember seeing this problem with the SP3i. But it was fixed in the initial ROM update.

Yeah the things you mention are significant. Don't know that I would risk a ROM flash on a different phone though.

It was my lame attempt at a joke. Like...I know I'm going to ruin my phone so I'll have the money to back it up....kind of thing.

I didnt really get a HUGE bonus at work either! :D

Actually, you wouldn't loose the WiFi. At least you shouldn't. WiFi is built-in the OS. So it detects the hardware on your SP5m, and doesn't detect the hardware on the 2125. But it's still there. If you happened to flash the SP5m with the 2125 ROM you should still have WiFi. ;)

But what about the wifi driver? I am sure that is HTC specific.

I don't know about that. I thought WiFi support was baked into the OS (WinMo5). I've heard a lot of talk about the WiFi files are still on the 2125 device. What files they are looking at, I don't know.

Anyone know what this "password" field is for when installing the modem driver?

:?: :?

What password field? Are you talking about Dial up networking. Using the Smartphone as a modem for your laptop?

Apparently this issue was the cause of the phone to disappear from Cingulars site. It doesn't sound like too many phones were affected.

I still haven't hard reset the 2125. I am trying out apps. And once I found enought WM5.0 compatible apps that I can live with. Then I will check out this memory mystery.
