The phone lacks music-dedicated keys of the other versions, and looks as the earlier leaked Cingular 2100 device. Neither the manual of the device nor the images of it show any evidence of Wi-Fi, which means that the final device shouldn't have it, which confirms the rumors."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Jerry-HTC-Tornado-Cingular_tn.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/><br /><br />We have good news and bad news. The phone is coming but NO WiFi. We had originally posted about this <a href="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9556">here</a> and it looks like our speculations were right. It is unfortunate that Cingular decided to go with a crippled phone. It doesn't surprise me though. These carriers do not want you getting around their data plans.

Doesn't surprise me either but no Wi-fi sucks. I might have to switch to Sprint and get the HTC Apache which has wi-fi and $15 a month all you can eat EV-DO too....

Well I've been following this phone on the forums for a few weeks now (Cingular 2 year contract just expired, looking to get my first 8)) and I keep hoping that this phone will have WiFi. Following the Engadget story (http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000080070422/):

Update: We didn’t realize the 2100 was as anticipated as it apparently is, but after a flurry of write-ins one stalward reader, Uni, sourced this doc (https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=562864&amp;native_or_pdf=pdf) [PDF] from the FCC site. Uni seems to have unearthed an alternate filing for the NM8TND (Tornado) that includes WiFi spectrum — 2.412GHz to 2.462GHz — and that sweet, sweet logo we crave. Cingular, end the mystery already, would ya?

The link given by the update goes to an FCC document which shows the innards of the smartphone, and the first image clearly details the WiFi logo on the inside. Dare I get my hopes up yet again? Who knows.

unfortunately, I don't think we'll be that fortunate to get a WiFi capable phone from Cingular. They don't strike me as the kind of company that would treat their customers to such a thing.

I really hope they prove me wrong, but I'm not holding my breath...

But will Cingular go to the trouble of removing the Wifi components? Or just not installing an antenna? My guess is the latter, it wouldn't cost so much as redesigning the circuit board. So I bet you'll be able to open up your Cingular phone and plug in a little antenna and off you go.

If it does not has wi-fi why the funk it has that ugly hump?

Hrm.. Perhaps there is two different models that Cingular is planning to offer? Just a random thought. :?

Love my SP5m on Cingular. I guess if you want wi-fi you just have to pay a little extra for it.

Based on the FCC certifications, there are two models:

- NM8TNDF, No WiFi, Cingular (http://tinyurl.com/7uywf)
- NM8TND, With WiFi, T-Mobile (http://tinyurl.com/e34ba)

Ha! That explains things a little. I wonder if Cingular knew that their competitor was picking the same model and keeping the WiFi? I'm guessing they didn't.

I don't understand why Cingular puts that stupid plastic on top if there is no wi-fi.

The other versions of this phone w/ no wi-fi don't have the "hump" .

This phone is ugly I did rather buy less functioning phone that looks better.

Wonderful news! Thanks Kris. I've been thinking of leaving Cingular in April (contract expires), this just seals the deal then.

Could this phone have a push to talk feature? COuld that be the reason for the hump?

I don't think so.

Wasn't this phone supposed to come out first on T-Mobile, in the USA?

Or was that another phone?

Why is it that Cingular always ends up getting the smartphones, even if the first announcements say that T-Mobile will get it?

Has anyone heard any new news about T-Mobile USA coming out with a Windows Smartphone soon?

YES T-Mo was SUPPOSED to come out with this (already) but like so many things with T-Mo (outside of their calling plan price points) they just can't seem to get their act together to LEAD the USA in the marketplace - sigh...

I would be surprised if T-Mo got this out before Cing. I think I'm going to switch plans and bail on T-Mo after 5 years. OF course I say this at least once a quarter - usually after I see how the other networks are adopting new technology pieces (like this) and T-mo Germany doing the same over in Europe but nothing - NOTHING here....

The longer and longer I have to wait for these phones, the less and less I feel compelled to buy one. :(

Every week and month longer I need to wait, is one week or month closer to a Smartphone with integrated 4GB storage and strong multimedia capabilities.

The lack of WiFi doesn't seem to be a huge deal to me... I'm playing with the device right now and I'm regularly seeing 170-200kb/s downloads on the 200kb and 600kb tests from DSLReports Mobile speed test...

I guess I just value battery life...

I just think the hump is to accomodate a bigger antenna. Since in the US the coverage is not as good as in Europe, I am sure that the bigger antenna helps in giving the handset slightly better reception than its hump-less cousins sold in Europe.

I dont know why....the SP5m has great reception without it under Cingular.

I would agree - even without being on Cingular. I find the phone has much better reception, and the voice quality is also much improved. :D

I don't think I'm falling for this phone. I'm going to wait and get the first WM 2k5 HSDPA handsets.

Agreed. I'm thinking my Typhoon can last another generation. Let's just hope someone (other than Apple) can deliver a killer converged phone/music device.

I won't be buying this phone.

I don't care about Wi-fi, but the hump makes the phone look so ugly.

Also it may have the screen angle problem of the SMT 5600.

Why does cingular carry only one Smartphone at a time?

I will have to bit the bullet and buy a dumbphone and a PPC combo instead of a Smartphone

Just out of curiosity - where did you buy the SP5m from?

Expansys. It's listed on their Canadian and UK sites. I'm not sure why it's not listed on the US site. You might want to call or email them and ask why? It appears that the phone I recieved was sent from their office in IL.

Also, if I recall, there was another online retailer selling these. Someone (sven?) posted a link in another thread. I know, that isn't much help, eh? ;)
