The change is spurred by SBC (Cigular's parent company) buying out AT&amp;T and getting rights to the name. Last year Cingular bought out AT&amp;T Wireless and converted it under its existing brand."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Temporale-20050112-Cingular.gif" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/><br /><br />Can't we just bury that brand name once and for all? I know it is recognized everywhere but for what? A dinosaur company that made huge mistakes and ended up being buried? AT&amp;T R.I.P already! I like the Cingular name and logo. This is silly.

I agree with you Jerry. I like the Cingular name and logo. The blue cingular with the orange splat just works. Maybe someone at a company that makes the signs that are on all of the Cingular stores is on SBC's board of directors?

This is just plain silly. They just spent all that money to convert everything over to Cingular, and now they're going to spend even more money to convert back to AT&amp;T. I'm sure the share holders are happy about this move.

lol silly isnt the word. "ooooh just let the child do what he wants...its his moneeey!"

as long as i continue to get excellent service...i couldn't care less what they call themselves.

Changing the name to ATT is just stupid - for many reasons.

In addition it's costly, wasteful and will cost us users/customers in the short run. (advertising, etc).

Also - didn't AT&amp;T change their name to ATT???

When did the "&amp;" return?

i wouldn't put to much thought behind this. part of the buyout deal was that Cingular would phase out the ATT name all together within 6 months. this is why you can no longer buy ATT phones or anything else from ATT.

the reason behind that was so ATT could use their name to start another cellular company im the future if they chose to do so. at one point after the merger their was even talk on ATT side to rent towers from Sprint and launch a CDMA service in the ATT name within a 6 year time frame.

Looks to me like they plan on doing it:

"In an interview with USA TODAY on Friday, Whitacre left no doubt about his plans. Asked if the company planned to drop the Cingular name in favor of the AT&amp;T brand, Whitacre said, "Yes, we do.""

Great, now we'll have to migrate back over to AT&amp;T... They do realize we aren't birds right? All this migrating can't be good for anybody.

Funny thing is, I wrote my last post on the way to work. When i get to work the first thing I hear is "Guess what, we're being renamed back to AT&amp;T"

It wouldn't be so bad if they brought back the unlimited plan with the name change though, I miss unlimited everything for 100 a month which is pretty much what im paying now for a bajillion minutes and unlimited data :(

EDIT: Just got done talking to my Cingular rep. The name change isn't going to effect Cingular, just SBC and select markets where the Cingular name isn't responding well. Nationwide though we will still use the Cingular name for many years to come.

The guy they are quoting didn't make any distinctions. Just said they were dropping Cingular. I can't imagine they would want all these different names when they think ATT is so awe inspiring. I wouldn't put it on a trash bin myself.

I knew if I held out long enough Cingular would be back my way. I think I'm the last AT&amp;T user. :D

Yes!

I can bend corporate by the strength of my will!
 Bwahahahahahahahaha!

Oops... did I say that out loud? :worried:
