There is much to consider though. It probably won't be upgradeable to WM2005 and there are a lot of new phones coming out. Still it is a good price. I wonder where they came from? This is probably just a website deal so head over there and check it out if you are interested.

Not sure where they come from but they're offering a 1 year warranty on them which is really good. They're offering the Treo 650 refurb for $139 with 1 year warranty as well. Ooopps! Did I just say a dirty word? (Treo)

They're doing it to spite you Jerry, plain and simple :D

I knew it! It's a conspiracy. I bet Moto is behind it somehow too :worried:

Thanks for the heads up. Just order one. Can't beat that price. I don't see much point upgrading to WM5. Who can wait another year?

It is a great phone. No question. You will be happy with it.

At that price, eBay, obviously :P

Wow. What a price. Might have to pick one up for this offer. But the two-year contract thing... As you may know, I'll be switching to Cingular in the coming month or so, and would like to ge a WM5 smartphone. However, say I get a SMT5600 and then Cingular releases a WM5 phone a few weeks later. Can I buy the new phone at the 2-yr contract price? Does that extend my contract? How does Cingular handle that?

Unfortunately no. You can't get another upgrade for at least a year. Not at an upgrade price at least.

Ah, unfortunate indeed. :( Guess I'll be waiting until they have a WM5 smartphone then. Thanks for the quick response.

Well, now that's not 100% true. You'll get a good phone for a cheap price. You can always get another phone from anywhere - like ebay, and drop your SIM in and away you go. You just can't get an upgraded phone from Cingular anytime soon.

Ah, right. But I'm just guessing that if I want a WM5 phone anytime soon after Cingular releases one, it won't be cheap anywhere, and won't show up on ebay for a month or so. I think I'll just wait a few more weeks so I can get the cheaper phone from Cingular the first time.

Don't say that! I have one to sell still. ;)

I will too soon! I do think it would be worth say $100 or so and not have to get a contract so one could still upgrade when the WM5 device comes along. On the other hand it is usually a $100 difference between the upgrade and standard price of a new device. On the horns of a dilemma so to speak.

"*Probably* won't be upgradable to WM5"? The SMT5600 will most assuredly not be upgradable, ever. Neither HTC nor MSFT is going to do the work necessary to get the drivers working for the SMT (for the camera, for instance). Besides, I'd rather spend the dosh on the Wizard whenever Cingular gets around to releasing it.

I had often thought of the market for refurbed smartphones, but I always thought that it would be for the MPX220,

I myself generated 4 returns of that unit without a single complaint from the point of sale. Times that by the number of dissatisfied 220 owners and I would have thought that these would be out on the market in droves.

So if I take out my 7100t sim card and put it in a smt5600, it will work with my tmobile account? Is there anything else I'd have to do?

You need to get rebate of $150 from voice plan of $39.95 plus data plan to qualify.

Hmm, that's a Blackberry isn't it? I didn't think they had standard SIM cards, but I'm not sure.

If it is a standard SIM ANDIF the SMT5600 isn't locked to Cingular, you can. You can get an SMT 5600 unlocked for $50-$75, or for free if you hunt around for the process on the web and are brave enough, or I bet you can buy an unlocked SMT, but those usually demand a higher price.

Yea, it's a blackberry. I think it'd be cool if I could use two different phones. I did have to install a sim card. How do I know if it is a standard sim card? And if it is a standard sim card, I should be able to use the unlocked smt5600? Thanks

Well, you would have to configure the SMT5600 for T-Mobile. But that's a one time thing.

By "configure", do you mean unlock?

When I got my (unlocked) Cingular SMT5600, I stuck my Rogers sim in it and was off to the races.

Unlock and setup your GPRS settings. That's all. :D

You've actually got three issues you're facing. The first is that the data plan for CrackBerry is different than a data plan for a Smartphone. You would have to call T-Mo and have them switch you over to a different data plan (BlackBerry and Smartphone data plans are different, there is a very technical difference between the two). But your SIM will work just fine. I have done exactly this several times on the Cingular network with a 7100g, an SMT5600, and an SX-66.

Another problem is that you must unlock the SMT5600 before it will work on the T-mo network (SIM unlock, not application unlock). Google on SMT5600 unlock. Cingular locks their phones so that they only work with Cingular SIM cards.

Once you have the phone unlocked, and your SIM inserted (and a data plan for your Smartphone), you will need to reconfigure your phone to work on the T-mobile data network. This usually involves GPRS and Proxy settings on the phone (you can google on that, too). These settings are used to access the data services.

Other than unlocking your phone so the SIM works, you can easily swap the SIM between your 7100t and SMT5600 and have either work as a PHONE. The complications arise when you want to use the data services. In my experience with Cingular, they cannot configure your account so that it will provide data connections to a BlackBerry or Smartphone using the same SIM (at the same time). BlackBerry's need to talk to/through the RIM network. Smartphones don't.

The more I think about it, I think I'll stick with my 7100t. I don't think the smt5600 would give me anything I don't already have. I could care less about having a camera and I don't listen to MP3's on the player I've got. I just think the smt5600 is a cool looking phone but I think the BB 7100t will actually suit my needs more. Thanks for all the good info though.

I went into a Cingular branch today to find out why the SMT 5600 (refurb) is so cheap online. The Cingular salesman told me that AT&T had a boat load of SMT 5600's at the time of the merge so Cingular had to program them to work with Cingular SIM cards as well as install the Cingular software. He pretty much said that the phones are new but had to be sold as refurbished because of the changes made. I didn't ask about the treo 650.

Greetz,

I just received my refurb on Tuesday and so far it is working well. The only problem I have is the handset speaker has a faint squeal for the first few seconds of a call (I don't hear the squeal with headset or speakerphone). It came in an oversized generic white box with all the accessories and test specs from a company that I assume did the refurb. Only complaint about the phone is the size of the volume and keypad buttons.

Smartphones are new for me, but so far I am enjoying the phone. The kewl things I like the most is bluetooth, 1Gig of MP3 that stops when a call comes in and mobile tv.

Darn, looks like the deal's over. Does anyone have a direct link to the refurb 5600 on cingular.com? Maybe there's still a chance to get the last minute deal.

I visited a Cingular retail store today, and was planning on ordering this phone online since the WM5 phone still isn't available. Just my luck with the timing. :x
