Iv'e always liked the look of this phone, looks rock solid. Does it have GPS integrated?! Wow! I saw that it's tri-band, any chance of a european incarnation, you think?

It's missing ...

Win Mobile 05'
BlueTooth
Direct Talk (off network walkie talkie - great for international travel)

Why do I want it so bad?

Why do I want it so bad?

To me lack of Bluetooth seems to be the most negative point about this Smartphone.

Can someone explain Direct Talk feature and the Walkie-Talkie feature. Are they same? Or different?

I don't know much about Nextel technology. The Walkie-Talkie feature of Nextel requires the Nextel cell towers? Correct?

Awesome. 8) Have fun with the new toy.

So how does it look? Is it cool looking when compared to other Nextel phones and when compared with non-Nextel phones? :-)

Direct Talk is like FRS two-way built in, not requiring towers.
Direct Connect (Walkie-talkie) does require Nextel towers.

I'm new to Smartphone, how do I unlock this thing??

Well, it replaced my i1000plus. So it is a great upgrade for me. It seems like a modern cell phone. Not as sleek and small as others, but very nice. It feels quality to me too.

So, how do you unlock this thing??

I'll assume you're talking about application lock. The answer is, you can't. At least not now. If you're lucky there might be a hack at some point to unlock it, but the Samsung i600 never got that.

Yeah, application lock.

So, does that mean I can't install any apps, like Papyrus for instance? I tried a couple of freebies and it says "Access Denied... not digitally signed..."

Can I only install software directly from Sprint/Nextel?

Thanks. So with Direct Talk two handsets can talk to each other. Wow. 8O That is a true Walkie Talkie. I can see why businesses love this feature. :-)

Are you talking about carrier unlock? To use it on a different carrier. (I don't think it makes sense)

I believe you are talking about application unlock. So that you can install your un-trusted and un-certified applications. The only straightforward way, that might work is using an application called Tweaks2K2. (http://www.tweaks2k2.com/portal/staticpages/index.php?page=20050317130430805) Give it a try. It may work for the i930.

And a word of caution. Removing the application security is not recommended. You should make sure that the application is from a reputable source. :-)

Oh..one more question. The external screen. Is it color with black text on white background, with yellow Nextel. That looks awesome. 8)

For Nextel users I am sure this is a big upgrade. There is pretty good reason why some people like Nextel. For them more than the Bluetooth, the lack of Direct Talk would be the biggest drawback.

And I think you are jealous. ;-) Your erstwhile Motorola Smartphone the MPx220 didn't have a nice big external screen. The color screen it had was unreadable in most situations. :rotfl:

OK but the Q will have all of that and more!

Ok that is a bit over the top but I'm hoping!

This phone DOES NOT have Direct Talk. (Per the Sprint/Nextel Site)
Lack of BT is a bummer, but there are users that are ttesting BT and Wi-Fi cards in the SD slot.

Somebody needs to explain what is so great about this "push to talk" stuff. I played with it for a bit with Verizon and the Moto v60p and found it kinda silly. Other than free minutes what is the point?

I can see it valuable for business users. In a couple of clicks talk to your team member. Construction site. Shop floors. Close friends. Spouse.

Yeah but its so easy to speed dial and even with push to talk you have to wait for the other party to answer. I've listened to people talk to family members using push to talk and it just seemed ridiculous. The "walkie talkie" is an ancient form of communication in an era of Smartphones.

I'm sorry to say it so bluntly, but if you use Nextel and you don't like this phone your nuts. This phone represents the ultimate challange for any techies that enjoy's "hacking" or modifying thier toys. The Direct connect is awesome, but the Windows mobile OS is the topping on the cake! There are a few misconceptions posted in this thread that I will correct.

1. What's so great about Nextel's Direct Connect?

A. Some carriers have added a 2 way radio service (Verizon). However, there is a huge difference between the Quality of Nextel's 2 way vs. all the other companies 2 way. Verizon uses a software based 2 way platform which really hurts it's performance. On Verizon's service the delay time between pushing the 2way button and actually connecting with your caller is massive. On Nextel they use IDEN network which uses hardware circuits that make the 2way service ussually immeadiate and of good sound quality.

2. No Bluetooth?

A. No the i930 has no BT, but if you go to Socket Communications website you can buy a BT SD adapter that users on Howards forum have proven to work great. However, take this astep further and you can buy the Wi-Fi SD card and use the i930 in tandem with a VOIP service making your i930 able to act as a mobile and your VOIP home phone handset!

3. No Direct Talk FRS radio>

A. I have heard that if Motorola had put any more radio chipsets in the i930 that the FCC would have had to give it a diiferent qualifications class. The i930 has a cell, 2way, and GSM chipsets already any more would start the FCC to argue about the phones approval meaning more delays.

4. Does the i930 use the higher speed data service called Wi-DEN?

A. YES, but it has not been deployed in the towers yet. THE PHONE DOES HAVE THE WIDEN ABILITY!!

Wow..this is awesome. The Nextel SD slot can take Wi-Fi and Bluetooth cards.
