I haven't installed it yet...my C500 is with Pocket PC Techs to see if they can clean all the dust from under the screen.

Is there any word yet on which smartphones will have Windows Mobile 5 when shipping? I am Soooo tempted by the C550, but it's not running Windows mobile 5 (yet, if at all).

The Cingular Audiovox 5600 already has it for one.

The C550 doesn't have WM10?! Are you sure? If they didn't load WMP10 on that phone, then they're out to lunch.

I've heard that new C500's have it, the Audiovox has always had it. I don't think i-mate has it. Anyone know what the SDA has?

When oh when will the O2XphoneII get WMP10. This is seriously dampening my enthusiasm.....

PR.

I did the upgrade and it all seems to have worked ok. There was some momentary annoyance when I was trying to remember the app I used to enable cleartype and stop GPRS dropping after every web page loads but I found it and it seems to be ok.

I haven't noticed anything other than WM10 being on there, and I haven't tested that as I only have the standard 16mb miniSD card although I have a 512mb on order now.

C500 users, you guys are so lucky!

 i-mate why are you torturing the SP3i users? :really mad:

i-mate had promised WMP10 update long long time ago, but they have not released it.

The 5600 has always had WMP10. It was a feature from day 1. I got mine back in November. I can't tell you the ROM version, because I'm not using the 5600 right now. I can check later tonight if it matters.

My Cingular SMT5600 has
Operator 2.0.42.20
Manufacturer 2.5.42.40
And yes it has Pocket MP10

Not all that exciting to me. You get DRM support to the flash card, but you lose any on-device playlist editing. The DRM never bothered me as I always ripped my music from my purchased CDs. [I got a few purchases from Napster, and cut them to CD and re-ripped too. Good thing because there is at least one track that I bought, that the artist and Napster apparently disagreed on, the download crashed on my PC, and you can no longer re-download that.]

The automatic file conversion is great, but you have to have the PPC/SP partnered (not guest it seems) for some things to work and my MCE PC, where the media is, isn't the usual partner. With the two partner limit, I have to choose between main, work, and laptop already.

I'd love it if you could stick a CF card in a reader and have MP10 transcode videos for play on a PPC. Doesn't seem to want to do that unless an actuall PPC is attached though. Have to resort manual transcoding.

So, IMHO, MP10 is a mixed blessing.

Ok, I just finished the upgrade. No problems. It took a little longer than I was expecting on first boot, but once it finished running the config script, I rebooted and everything seems fine.

Off to load some apps! 8)

Here's a small change I noticed; the new ROM has a vibrating phone icon in the top tool bar when the phone is set to silent. This icon has been reported by people with the Cingular ROM version of the Audiovox.

I like it! It kind of looks like a dancing phone - only not animated. ;)

I'm new to these things, so please bear with me: When a rom update comes out from a particular carrier, can that update be applied to any unlocked phone of that model?

Are you asking if the ROM Update from Orange for the C500 could be installed on the Audiovox SMT5600? (or a similiar type situation) If so, the answer is no. In the same respect as a Pocket PC ROM can't be installed on just any Pocket PC. They are usually locked to the vendors phone.

So even if multiple vendors carry the same model, you can't apply an update for a given model from a given vendor to the same model from a different vendor if your phone is unlocked?

I realize unlocking just makes it so that you can use your phone on whichever carrier you choose (with some limitations) but if the phone isn't tied to one carrier, then what prevents you from applying any update to that model of phone, to your particular phone? It's not like Dell vs HP in this case; the SMT5600 is rebranded across several venders.

Correct, However each carrier can (and does) customize the ROM image to their network. Some add applications, while other remove, some tweak functionality, and some don't. Overall, yes you should be able to do it, and there might even be some hacks out there to do it. I know that Orange does check the hardware before the ROM is flashed to make sure that it is their device. I can only assume that this is done with other carriers - not that they have issued any updates.

HEY! You already got WMP10!

While setting up my phone, I noticed that the extra symbols (hold the * key and select 1) screen has way more symbols than before. Just in case you had problems finding the character you wanted to input, they should all be covered off now.

What lock are you talking about? Carrier Locked? Then no, it won't be locked again. Application locked? Then yes. You'll have to de-cert and unlock the phone again - a relatively painless and totally free process.

I completed the upgrade last night. The only disappointments (with the procedures, not the S/W) were that I could not back up my SPV to my PC - the option was greyed-out in ActiveSync. Also, I could not back up to Orange (maybe network problems..?). Luckily, since the only "back-upable" data was from Outlook, I knew that I could restore it easliy enough from there. Of course, I had already backed up my other data like ringtones, etc.
Anyway, I like the track queue feature of WMP10; Version 9 was a bit clunky.

Obviously, I had to re-pair my PC and headset via bluetooth which went without any hiccups.

Another satisfied customer, I'd say...

For some unknown reason, Microsoft crippled Activesync from being able to back up a Smartphone. :(
