Two Peaks latest application, Tipper, looks like a nice solution since it offers a handy feature I haven't seen on any of the other similar applications. Tipper will do a little rounding to make sure you don't have any fractions of a dollar to deal with. Best of all, it's totally free. So head on over to the Two Peaks website and download a copy.

I may have too much time on my hands, but the "rounding up" on this Tipper is a little out of control. For instance, if your bill is $14.85 and you plug in a 15% tip, it actually calculates a tip of 21%. I'm not a math major, but that is a gross miscalculation.

Ah, I see what's happening. It rounds up no matter how much "over" the nearest whole dollar. So in this case,

$14.85 * 15% = $17.08

Tipper then rounds up $0.92 to $18.00 effectively making the tip 21% (21.25% to be more accurate. ;) )

So while 21% seems like a lot, we're really only talking about a $1. Now, if the total was $148.50 then we're looking at $0.21 or a difference of just 0.15% - or next to nothing.

All this math is making my head start to spin! In the end, I think the waiter or waitress with the $14.85 bill - on average - would deserve the extra $1. 8)
