It will not be handsets though and, despite their sophisticated ability to communicate, they will not be chatting or texting each other. Instead they will have collars embedded with a mobile phone SIM card to keep track of their movements. Mobile phone technology is revolutionising the way animals - both on land and sea - are tracked. Some 200 animals in Africa, including elephants, zebras and baboons, are now tracked via SIM cards, which is a much cheaper technology than using a satellite system."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Temporale-20050523-Dolphin.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><br />A whole new generation will get to enjoy Dolphins. Although, it won't be swimming with them. Kids will soon be texting with them. Just think of the stories and insight that the Dolphins will be able to share with the youth of today.

"Dear Johnny,
Boy, I wish I had thumbs. T9 would be a lot easier with something a little smaller than a fin. Tommy showed me something yesterday: Fire. I was so excited, I swam home right away to show my folks. Unfortunately, by the time I got the fire home, it was just a wet burnt stick. Hope things are going well for you. So long!

~ Donovan

P.S. - and thanks for all the fish!"

Sorry, couldn't resist.

As imperium cited, don't be dissin' the dolphins -- they know a lot (http://hitchhikers.movies.go.com/). :D

(The intro to the movie was actually pretty cute.)

OK I am not generally one for conspiracy theories, but someone somewhere is holding out communications technology from us. They can put a SIM on a dolphin under the ocean and track him, they can control a rover on Mars and send back pictures from it, but I walk down the hallway from my desk at work and I have no signal.........

Agreed. I've not seen HHGTTG yet, but have been told that it's surprisingly good.

I'm impressed that the dolphins 'phones' working underwater though!

By no means is it perfect, but like the book, the movie doesn't take itself too seriously, so I liked the vibe of the movie very much. Of course, the other problem is that the movie is geared for the average moviegoer, not us H2G2 geeks, so some of the subtler jokes are gone. But I think it's an acceptable tradeoff. There are some new plot elements in the movie that Adams penned that work quite nicely.

(Haven't seen it yet? For shame! I only see about 2-3 movies per year and even I have gone and seen it. ;))

Well, put it this way. When I eventually go to see Revenge of the Sith, it will be the first film I will have seen this year......
