Well, that's changed. You can now get the Audiovox SMT5600 with Cingular branding from Amazon for just $99.99 after rebates. Now that's a nice deal. If you've been holding out for a SMT5600, I would think this is a good time. 8)

Are people with AT&T accounts allowed to receive the rebate if they change over to Cingular and get this phone via Amazon? I had a hell of a time getting a straight answer from Cingular phone support and their store fronts on this question over the winter. I ended up walking away from them and sticking with my plan as is until my contract expired.

But knowing I am about to spend $225 for this same phone, when I can get it for $99 after rebate... I'm not gonna lie to ya, that's pretty tempting!

Well, I don't know for sure, since I'm not in the US and I'm not a Cingular/AT&T customer or representative. ;)

However, I would think that as long as you are not locked in with AT&T, you should be treated as a new customer with Cingular.

... However, I would think that as long as you are not locked in with AT&T, you should be treated as a new customer with Cingular. That is what the Cingular phone people said... but the store front people told me. They continued to tell me that AFTER we had the Cingular phone support people on the phone!

As for the kiosks in Best Buy and such... the story they told me was that their local Cingular reps told them that if they gave someone a rebate who was an AT&T customer, they would be canned. 8O

IMO, Cingular is no different that AT&T... one hand still has no clue what the other is doing. Guess I'll be calling Cingular tonight and asking about the Amazon deal and whether or not I will get the rebate.

Wonder what story I will get this time around.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm guessing you want to keep your existing number. Otherwise, just cancel out with AT&T and then sign up with Cingular.

Alright, I had this enlightening conversation with Cingular last week when I tried to switch my AT&T Audiovox GSM plan to Cingular so my wife and I could be on one plan...saving a little money.

They told me I'd have to buy a new Audiovox 5600 through Cingular so I'd be using their equipment, thus making my current phone a paper weight.

Is there a way to unlock my AT&T phone and have it be used properly on the Cingular network? This stupid rule doesn't make any sense. Why Cingular can't recognize my AT&T equipment, since they now sell the same phone is ridiculous.

Anyone have any thoughts, or ways to fight this?

Rich

I just unlocked my AT&T Audiovox SMT 5600 with this service Saturday. Cost about $37 and took all of 5 minutes to complete.

So if I unlock my phone, can I migrate to Cingular? I asked Cingular this on the phone, and they said that wouldn't work.

it works, but if you have a AT&T Audiovox SMT 5600 beaware of "quirk" of using the Cingular SIM in an unlocked AT&T phone.
