Help - new SMT5600 screen stuck in "SIM Failure" mode

Complete noob here with a total noob question.

Just bought from ebay an AT&T STM5600 with no SIM. I"ve signed up with Cingular and have yet to receive the SIM card. That said, in the mean time, I am trying to unlock the phone but encountered the following problem:

I'm trying to dial *#06# to get the IMEI number, but the screen is stuck on SIM Failure mode with this message: "Invalid or missing SIM card". All the keys are locked up, and I could not get out of this screen. Do I need the SIM card to do so?

How do I get out from this "Sim Failure" screen?

Pull the battery.

You can't use the phone without a SIM. If you want the IMEI and can't wait, look under the battery, it should be listed there too. :)

Thanks Mike, the Cingular sim card arrived today. Once plugged in, my SMT5600 works like a charm.
