Following in the vein of its powerful predecessor, the MDA III, the MDA IV offers not only GSM, GPRS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, but also adds support for WCDMA-based 3G. A tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz, the MDA IV features one less band than its quad-band predecessor, but more than compensates for the fact by becoming the very first UMTS compatible communicator based on the Windows Mobile platform. Furthermore, the MDA IV is also the first communicator to sport a VGA display with a resolution of 480 x 640 pixels, and will be powered by a 520 MHz Intel XScale processor."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Temporale-20050202-NewMotoPhone.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><br />Looks pretty sweet, doesn't it. What do you guys think? <br /><br /><b>Update:</b> This may be a Pocket PC Phone Edition. All the information I've seen so far doesn't rule out either platform. :? Damn Microsoft and their confusing naming scheme.<br /><br /><b>Updated Again:</b> I just removed my refernces to Moto, it's obvious this isn't a Motorola device. :)

I wonder how much memory it will have? There was no mention of it in the article.

Wow. Not only am I waiting for it I may actually switch carriers to get it and I'm a die hard Verizon user. (Even though the customer service could be a bit better!)

I wanted to get the V710 but can't justify it with all of those bluetooth features disabled. :(

Not sure I'd go to Tmobile to get this one though....maybe Cingular?

I wouldn't panic yet. Another thing, The Motorola name and Logo are conspicuously absent. I have two Moto's in front of me and their name and/or logo are on every side and inside of the units.

It's an ODM device, who knows who makes it at this point. Hopefully it's going to get picked up by Cingular or AT&amp;T in the states. And it's Pocket PC with VGA screen. SWEET. Not Smartphone, BUT I have a feeling this could be the launch device for the new Windows Mobile platform that combines the 2 (Smartphone/Pocket PC) the rumored "Windows Mobile 2006" or whatever it's going to be called...

I just hope it makes it to market before it's obsolete. Motorola hasn't exactly been stellar in that department :?

Opps, you're right. Don't know where I got moto. I'll update the thread...

And it's Pocket PC with VGA screen. SWEET. Not Smartphone,

How do you know this? What are you basing it on?

Agreed... And as much as my Motorola rep and I love each other, I tell him that from time to time

This won't be a Moto device - if it follows the other MDA/XDA devices, which are Pocket PC Phone Editions, it will be sold under the Audiovox and/or Siemens brand.

We were already starting to bash Moto here for something they didn't even make! :rotfl:

Looks like a real sweet device. I guess everyone just wanted to get in some pre-emptive Moto bashing, just in case.

I'm getting that from here:

and here:

Now I just have to figure out how to get on the beta test list for this

Since it has UMTS, I figure being in Seattle I might have a good chance of talking to a few friends who have friends who work for the various big guys here in town

You know this is a bitter-sweet pill to take. Sweet because you know that HTC made this, so it will actually happen instead of the Moto vapor-hardware mpx device (yeah - when is that coming out and anyone wanna guess how many problems that is going to have?) and hands down it's a really cool device.

The bitter part of this is that we, in the USA, will never see it becuase T-mo senior staff has some frickin' love affair with "blackberry" and thinks that all the USA wants blackberry rather than cool windows devices like this, or say the SDA device... WAKE UP TMO USA!

If you check out the T-Mobile release (http://www.t-mobile.net/CDA/t-mobile_deutschland_newsdetails,1705,0,newsid-3665-yearid-3577-monthid-3669,en.html?w=820&amp;h=615), it doesn't mention Pocket PC anyhere. I have a feeling those sites are assuming that it will be Pocket PC based. And it very well may. But at this time, I don't see a stylus, or evidence of a touch screen. VGA, Screen Orientation, and WiFi, are either currently available or expected in the next release of Windows Mobile for Smartphones.

Of course, there is also a lack of softkeys below the screen... But who knows.

Mike, it's in the t-mo press release you linked...you gotta read the whole thing

This format takes the quality of "Internet in your pocket" to a new level. Additional functional highlights include two integrated cameras, loudspeakers and the Windows Mobile operating system. Once open, the VGA screen can be turned round in a single move to turn the mini-laptop into a PDA with a touchscreen. The MDA IV is scheduled to be available from this summer.

I was so busy looking for a Pocket PC or Smartphone reference that I totally missed "touchscreen" :( Oh well, Pocket PC device it must be.

Too busy that you didn't notice that we posted on it (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/index.php?action=expand,37238) an hour earlier? :P

(Actually, it took me about 20 minutes to sort out the gaggle of news to figure out what the heck was going on.)

Actually, Yes. I didn't have my email open - the email that my blasts get sent to, so I didn't notice the post.

One video cam is for video telephony when the device is open and you're typing away. The other is on the back for picture taken.

Does it also open in portrait mode to use as a phone, like the MPX?

How would one use this device as a phone?

Any news on whether T-Mobile USA will pick it up? They still haven't carried the T-Mobile SDA.

Well, you write: "... VGA display with a resolution of 480 x 640 pixels"

This rules out Smartphone, which has a maximum resolution of 320x240 (with Smartphone 2003 SE).
