The ”.mobi” domain, according to a consortium headed by Nokia, Vodafone and Microsoft, will create “the opportunity to streamline the deployment of new Internet sites optimized for mobile usage.” However, it’s hard to see how a new domain will do anything other than add to the confusion created by the proliferation of other “specialized” (read: useless) domains such as .info, .name and .biz."</i><br /><br />ICANN has made a mess of the TLD's and as this article states it will just add to the confusion that already exists.

I am Actual surprised that this passed. Didn't they originally oppose this? I think that such TLDs compromise the supposed ubiquity of the net.
Perhaps they conceded for the potential of the added revenue.

Maybe next we will have a .microsoft TLD 8O

This is totally riduculous. There's no reason why you need to have a new DOMAIN for mobile-friendly sites - if CONTENT (words) and FORM (html) are properly seperated, a mobile site is simply the same CONTENT wrapped up in a different FORM (a mobile template).

I agree, it should be transparent to the user.

exactly. That's why they approved it, because it's not needed. While other needed TLD are not approved - like .XXX for all adult sites.

Anyway, I imagine this will be as successful as .Name, .Info, and some of those other wasted TLDs. :?

As the owner of a website with the unforunate .cx ending I can tell you it probably won't get much use.

Depending on what you are doing a non- .com domain is just fine. But if you are doing anything commercial you need .com.

And way to go on selecting a name that's so hard to type on a keypad!

Try it: 6 (pause) 6 6 2 2 4 4 4. Brilliance.

That is a great catch! What a joke.

Yeah, a .wap tld would make a lot more sense for mobile users.

Looks like the committee members used BlackBerries and Treos. :-)
