The company plans to introduce Trend Micro Mobile Security Version 1.0 on Monday, and will allow so-called "smart phone" users to download and use the software for free until June 2005. The product contains protections against mobile threats like the recent Skulls Trojan and Cabir worm, as well as filtering for SMS spam, according to a statement. Trend Micro hopes to attract hordes of new customers who will purchase or receive sophisticated new handsets as gifts during the holiday season, allowing them to install the new Mobile Security product and receive antivirus updates at no cost until June 30, 2005"</i><br /><br />The race to protect your cell phone is on, and Trend Micro hopes to cash in by giving their antivirus tool away for free. Only time will tell how well this approach will work. The Windows Mobile camp is still awaiting it's first virus, but if you're on the Symbian side of the fence, you might want to take a closer look at this offering.

Interesting - have the Norton's or McAffee's every come out with anything even for the PPC devices?

Seems like there is a great untapped opportunity here - hmmm I wish I knew how to code - LOL

CA has released their eTrust Antivirus for Windows Mobile for Smartphone a while back. They were the first ones out. eTrust is more of an enterprise based Antivirus application. I don't think you can pick it up in the local software shop.

Norton has one for PPC, not for SmartPhone as far as I know.

You can get it here:

However, while they say it's "free" the program does expire on June 30th, 2005. I bet they will then be offering their first "pay"program then?

But it is nice of them to offer a free version for 7 months I guess![/url]

Opps, Sorry guys, I forgot to mention the June expiry in my post.

I'm willing to bet that we don't see much - if any - virus activity in the WM world in those 7 months.

You are correct, there have already been viruses for Windows Mobile, but they were for Pocket PC; they haven't been ported to Smartphone to the best of my knowledge. It's relatively simple to do, but I think there haven't been that many Vxers (virus writers) who own Smartphones yet.

As far as I know, F-secure was the first to make AV for Smartphones, and they have pretty advanced software. Trend has always made good products for the desktop, so hopefully they will continue with Smartphone. But the one to beat has always been Symantec..they have a very good Windows Mobile Pocket PC antivirus, and I'm betting their Smartphone offering will come out soon.

By the way, for anyone who hasn't tried our own AV for smartphone, please do grab a free copy:

Take care and have a good Kwanzaa :)

Sorry for the late reply....

I thought it was Computer Associates. I could be wrong on that, but that's what I remember.... :?

I'm almost sure CA made a free one also.
