I'm happy to report, that the Audiovox SMT5600 can now be purchased from Amazon for -$25.01. Yes, you read that right. You get $25.01 back when you buy this phone. You can thank Amazon for a nice $200 rebate form, and AT&T for a pretty decent $50 rebate. 8)

The phone must be purchased before November 3rd, even if the phone doesn't ship by then. 1 year AT&T activation is also required. To get the $50 AT&T rebate you need a 2-year activation, not just 1-year. :(

But it's also interesting that they have the mpx220 listed on that same rebate - it must be right on the horizon for AT&T.

Ok, so if you don't get the 2 year, you still get the $200 rebate. Which means this phone cost you $25. Amazing price, none the less. :D

Oh... Never looked at the list of phones. I'll have to pay closer attention to that.

If you look closer, they don't have the MPX220 on the Amazon rebate, but rather the V220. Why Motorola would name two phones so close together is beyond me.

I'm about to click the buy button at Amazon for this one though.

I was referring to the same rebate that requires the two-year activation - the $50 AT&T rebate. It's definitely the mpx220 - it has a massive picture of it. ;) See it here (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00068577C.01.RB01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg).

Yup, that's the MPx220 alright. The rebate offer is good from Oct 12th until Jan 6th. So I'm guessing we're going to see this phone sometime in the next month or so. :D

Has anyone here purchased the SMT5600 from Amazon with the rebate?

I already got one for $150 (and I am not looking back) but I want to refer my friends/family/co-workers to the Amazon link.

Do people have to pay the $250 up front? Is it a mail-in or instant rebate?

The $200 Amazon rebate is a mail in rebate, same as the AT&T $50 rebate.

So they do pay upfront, but you'll get more money back than you paid for the phone!

I decided paying $25 (with one year contract) was too good to pass up. I did have to pay the $250 upfront, and then I will receive a rebate at some point in the future.

This will be my first smartphone and I'm very much looking forward to using it and developing some software for it. I only wish AT&T had cheaper data plans.

Well, when I singed up with ATT I had the option of an unlimited plan for around $25 a month. That plan is for the phone only and not for tethered data transfer.

When your account goes through, you should call ATT and see if you can switch.

Yeah, I might do that, but I'm currently with Sprint, who has an unlimited plan for $10 a month. That's what I consider reasonable. Or even 100MB a month for $15 would be ok. As it is, I am going to be paying $13 a month for 4MB. If that doesn't work, I'll go for the full unlimited plan.

One of the biggest reason for purchasing a "smartphone" is having the capability to access data on the go. Being truely mobile requires a good and cost effective data plan. Excuse my french but ATT's unless wireless plan priced at $80 / month suck ass! Yes, I have both the MPx220 on Cingular which I use my T-Mobile sim card on, as well as the SMT 5600. Unfortunately, the sim unlocker from Florin doesn't work on this model yet.

So what's my point? I would rather pay the regular price up front for a handset (the SMT 5600 in this particular case), get it unlocked then to sign a 1 or 2 year contract with ATT just so I can save $50, $100 or even get the phone free! In the long run, the cost of being "free" is too high with ATT versus T-Mobile. My 2cents.

Yes, $80 is high for a mobile Internet plan, but $25 is reasonable.

Here is a screenshot I took from ATT's signup page for their "Mobile Internet Plan."

You have to be careful what you look at. Cingular for one has a $80 a month plan for unlmitied internet, but its independent of the phone service and is more geared toward laptop users. They have "wireless internet express plans" that start at $3 a month, but they don't mention a unlimted "wireless internet express" plan.

If you buy the phone though AT&T (where you won't get this deal), you HAVE to sign up for a data plan. If you buy it through Amazon, they give you the whole set of plans to choose from.

This is such a great opportunity. I just have to double check a few things, and then I'm off to buy one!

It would make sense that if you get the lowest (cheapest) possible data plan from Amazon/ATT you could then 'upgrade' later to another plan once your service begins.

Some things I'd like to point out:

1) With AT&T service, you can upgarade / downgrade within your contract without extending it. Dunno if this will hold through when they merge.

2) I called AT&T customer care. They said the merger should be complete in a few weeks. In this case, I can get the AT&T plan and then when they merge i can upgrade to a data plan. I'm sure the merged company will offer some very competitive rates for data.

I already have an MPX200 with a contract from AT&T. What's the best way I can go about getting this Audiovox from amazon the cheapest?

To get that $224.99 deal not the mention the $250 rebate, don't I need to order the phone with a contract for both? And since I already have a contract, I can't do that, can I?

The only think I can see me doing is cancelling my current plan ($175 charge i believe), and then getting the phone for -$25, which would make my total cost $150 to get this phone.

Are there any better ways? Thanks,

-Joe

I did buy the 5600 from ATT websit for $149 and a one year contract, and had my number transferred from Sprint. I do have a 30 day "test" period from ATT (I got it today), so how do I get the $25 from Amazon? If I buy another phone from them, will they be able to transfer the number?

If I get the $80 unlimited data plan, will I be able to use my 5600 as a modem via BT for my laptop? The ATT customer service I called today was not very helpful (or knowledgeabale).

You have to return your current 5600 to AT&T under the 30 day window and then purchase a new 5600 from Amazon. I'd like to do the same thing but Amazon doesn't support my geography (upstate NY) even though AT&T online does!

Unfortunately, this offer is for new accounts only... Once again, us existing ATTWS users, who lived through the ATTWS GSM migration debacle, who waited on the phone for hours for ATTWS Customer Care (now, there's an oxymoron!) to answer our questions, who have MPX 200 phones that ATTWS won't upgrade the OS, will have to pay $149. while the newbies will get the phone for -$25.... GRRRRRRRRRRRRR...

How is the service compared to Sprint? I too will be dropping Sprint to get this phone within the next week.

I think the service is as good though the drop call zones are different

I guess I must have missed something but Amazon FORCES you to sign up for the 10MB Monthly Data Transfer limit, so you are getting 25$ back on the phone but being forced to pay 80$ a month.
What happens if you sign up for a 2 year contract and then get thrown into Cingular?
Should I just wait for Cingular to start selling these phones or just buy the phone now?
But I am not paying 80$ a month, that blows...
