http://www.ppcw.net/?itemid=2099

"Today at the Windows XP Experience More event, Microsoft Corp. announced the launch of its Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, first to be introduced with the Audiovox SMT5600. It lets users automatically sync media content easily with a Windows XP PC, transfer album art or playlists, and take advantage of new digital music scenarios powered by Windows Media Digital Rights Management 10. These scenarios include the transfer of purchased music from services such as MSN Music, Musicmatch, MusicNow and Wal-Mart Music Downloads, along with the ability to transfer subscription content from services such as Napster."

Microsoft has unveiled the latest version of its Media Player for mobile devices. This crucial release not only enhances the core player but offers features that are supposed to help Microsoft gain a foothold in the online music industry and offer serious competition to the Apple iPods. Microsoft has also updated its Media Player site for the Mobile Devices. Interestingly, the web page has a section titled "How Do I Get Player 10 Mobile?", which I am sure everyone is dying to find out. Unfortunately it does not offer much information. :-( Currently only Audiovox SMT5600 and Dell Axim X50 are offering the player. HP iPaq rx3xxx and Dell Axim X30 (both are Pocket PC devices) will soon be getting the player as an update. No word on when the already released Smartphones like the Motorola MPx220 and SPV C500 will get the update. I am sure Microsoft would be trying its best to convince the wireless carriers and manufacturers to release them as updates for the recently launched Windows Mobile 2003 SE devices. However it remains to be seen if the carriers and vendors would oblige.

Update: Our reader Michael Aaron wrote to i-mate regarding PDA2k (Pocket PC Phone Edition device) and Player 10 update. The response makes me believe that i-mate might even be working on an update for its Smartphone devices: SP3 and SP3i. :-) Check my post in this thread for the mail note from i-mate support team.

I noticed the hx4700 wasn't on that list.
Sigh :(

I was surprised to find that T-Mobile SDA Music edition was not on the list. :-(

<insert noise of frustration here>

This is painful.

OK, I'd LOVE to use the MSN Music club to legally purchase music but it's pointless until I can listen to it on the move on my iPAQ 2210 or SPV C500.

It looks like I might be in luck with my C500 but if I want to listen on my Pocket PC I'll have to buy a new device.

Can Windows Mobile 2003 SE be that different from WM 2003 so that Microsoft can't release an upgrade to WMP10 for those devices? :roll:

There is hope! I would like to bet on the fact that i-mate is working on Player 10 update for its Smartphone (SP3 and SP3i) devices too. :-)
