The FCC has just approved the Orange C500. I guess that means that Orange is bringing the C500 to the US. I'm not sure who they would be partnering with, but I for one, and very happy about this news. :D

The C500 looks fantastic in early reviews, everyone especially seems impressed with the battery life in such a small package. The only problem is the lack of 850 band. By process of elimination we can assume the only carrier that might pick this up is T-Mobile, right?

any comparisons regarding size and weight to other smartphones? I have an i600 and have evaluated a Treo 600 and also have an iPAQ 4100 series.

Thanks.

I guess that means that Orange is bringing the C500 to the US.

Not necessarily - even products that won't be sold in the US are routinely sent for FCC testing as they may be used in the US. All the Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox models being prime examples of this.

Does this necessarily mean that Orange will be co-promoting this phone in the US. After all, it is an HTC phone. Couldnt they sell this thru other Networks or does Orange own the phone?

It would be nice to see Orange in the US as a new Network provider. I understand they do have offices here in the US in the Boston area.

That said.....

Looking at the GSM Model of the phone on the site...it is 900, 1800, 1900 bands. That would suggest it is a european phone and not one meant for the US.

Was checking out the user guide.

MiniSD slot is buried under the battery, so the initial reports were true :-(

Did you notice the Space Maker application (User Guide - IIII, Page 29 of 57). It allows you to erase EMail, SMS, Call History, Speed Dial, or Voice Notes. Pretty neat. Is that a third party app or an Orange only app?

Also the Specifications page (User Guide - IIII, Page 50 of 57).
- Windows Mobile 2003 Ozone Update, Second Edition
- In the Audio (page 51) it says 3-in-1 speaker???

This is found in the new HTC phones running WM2003 AFAIK... Our version of the HTC Voyager has Space Maker, Task Manager and File Manager in ROM.

I kinda like the idea of having the SD Slot under the battery...

It does have it's good points being under the battery...

If you decide to hack the registry and move items to the SD Card... you don't mess things up since you can't really remove the mini-SD card just like that...

But I guess that's about it as a good point...

I would add that the chance of the card falling out and getting lost is ZERO with the card under the battery. Something I have done on more than one occassion.

FCC approval means nothing about whether a product will be sold here. If it will be marketed FOR USE in the U.S., i.e. marketed as a tri-band world phone, regardless of WHERE it is marketed and sold, then technically it should be approved by the FCC.

When was the last time you saw an Arima, Philips, Pantech, Sagem, or Alcatel phone sold in the U.S.? They're approved by the FCC on a regular basis, even though no one has any intention of selling them here.

Now, since the C500 is an HTC device, it could easily be picked up and re-branded by anyone, and sold here. If T-Mobile decides they want to sell it, I'm sure HTC and Microsoft would be happy to make it happen. But FCC approval isn't necessarily a sign pointing that way.

So I guess all of the SPVs, etc, were FCC approved too. I wish there was an easy way to search their database! :)

Its made by IA Style which was bought by HTC not too long ago. (HTC makes the Orange SPV range of phones)

I would presume its gonna be picked up by QTek/iMate and marketed as such. I really hope iMate do pick it up, as in NZ vodaphone's (the only GPRS carrier) carries them, and I'd really love a "C500" / Smartphone 3 or whatever they call it. My Smartphone 2 is great, nice and fast, I just wish it was smaller/lighter, it broke my suit jacket pocket!

I was walking up the road for a meeting with http://www.embeddedfusion.com/, and had it in my top inner pocket, next thing i know its in the bottom of my suit jacket and theirs a hole in the pocket! and i'd just bought the suit too. grr. so bring on the c500.

and you can't put it in you pants pockets because it looks like your packing a sublaptop.

Thanks for clarifying the Space Maker app. I wish I could buy that app.

But what is the 3-in-1 Speaker deal. User Guide -> Specification -> Audio section (page 51) it says 3-in-1 speaker?
