I always thought that when you unlock the phone you get all the bands unlocked.

900Mhz is useful only if you travel outside of US. None of the Northamerican carriers use 900/1800 frequency.

I agree. It's not the bands that are locked anyway. Is it? My understanding is that it is the applications and the phone to a provider.

T-Mobile Data (GPRS) setup.

Before you proceed with the settings on the phone, you must have subscribed to the TMobile Data/GPRS plan.

You will see a G in a Square block in the top row of your Home Screen if you have GPRS subscribed.

Note : These configuration steps will work for other cell carriers and smartphones too. If the carrier is different some of the setting values will be different.

How to setup the phone
- Programs -> Settings -> Data Connections
- Press the 'Menu' soft key, then 'Edit Connections'
- Select 'GPRS Connections'
- Press 'Menu' softkey, select 'Add'

Regular Internet Data Connection

- Enter the following information on the screen
Description: <you can enter T-Zones or gprs or data, whatever its your choice>
Connects to: The Internet
Access Point: internet2.voicestream.com
- The rest of the fields can be left blank..they are
User Name:
Password:
Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0
Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0
IP Address:

- Click the 'Done' softkey

WAP Data Connection

Now to configure the WAP connection settings.

- In the 'GPRS Connections' screen, Press 'Menu' softkey, select 'Add'
- Enter the following information on the screen
Description: <your choice text, name it WAP>
Connects to: WAP Network
Access Point: wap.voicestream.com
User Name:
Password:
Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0
Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0
IP Address:
- Click the 'Done' softkey

- 'Done' once more to exit the GPRS Connections screen.

Now the Data/GPRS connections are configured.

WAP Proxy Configuration

- Select 'Proxy Connections' from the Connections.
- Press 'Menu' softkey, select 'Add'
- Enter the following information on the screen
Description:<your choice text, name it T-Zones WAP Proxy>
Connects From: The Internet
Connects To: WAP Network
Proxy (name:port): 216.155.165.50
Type: WAP
User name:
Password:
- Click the 'Done' softkey

- 'Done' once more to exit the Proxy Connections screen.

- 'Done' again :-) to exit the Connections screen.

- Verify that the Data Connections screen reads as follows
Internet Connection: Automatic
Work Connection: Automatic
WAP Connection: Automatic

- 'Done' for one last time

Now to verify the setup. Launch the browser. And point to http://www.smartphonethoughts.com. Too lazy to type, send your self an SMS message with that url in the body and then when you get it, click on the link in the Inbox :-)

And if I have not goofed up in describing the steps, you should be all set.

The ATT MPx200 is already application unlocked so you dont need to worry about that.

Is is SIM Locked, you you will need to unlock it to use it on any other carrier.

The phone's ROM blocks the 900 band. But the hardware is there. You would need to install new firmware (which is floating around) that will allow the phone to be TriBand (800, 900 and 1900). Though, again, the 900 band is of no use to you unless you travel outside the US.

Then Kris's settings would be necessary to use GPRS, WAP, and MMS on the phone.

Good Luck.

I wonder who (AT&T or Moto) decided to block the 900 band in ROM  Is it some new way to keep the customers from buying the phone cheap and re-selling it across the atlantic or something like that.

It is really weird, considering that Moto advertises the phone as tri-band and then ends up selling them as single band.

Beats the usefulness of GSM phones, I see them as world phone. I am waiting for MPx220, I will be very cautious with it.

I believe AT&T is the one who blocked the third band as the ROM image floating around is a leaked, non-ATT branded Moto ROM.

Also, I believe the UK Orange version of the MPx200 is Triband 900, 1800 & 1900.

:) First thanks for all the input everyone. If anyone knows the browser settings for AT&T mMode, I would appreciate an email, I found the flash upgrade software on ebay for $3.00, i bought it rather than searching endlessly which i had already done. If anyone wants it let me know. It formats the phone and reinstalls the original software removing all ATT software and unlocking the triband feature. AT&T probably locks the third band to prevent the phone from being sold overseas at the time of its launch, which is when i bought it. Also, I would be curious to see whether or not flashing the phone unlocks the sim lock as well, i would think it would because it formats the entire phone. Anyway if anyone needs the software let me know.

Also I am very interested in getting the 900mhz band unlocked, any ideas?

FYI:
Upgrading the firmware does reveal the 900Mhz option in the Options Setting. But the phone's hardware (or updated software) itself does not have the 900Mhz radio support.

I have MPx200 from AT&T which was unlocked and has updated firmware (I believe there is only one generic ROM version available freely). Currently on vacation in India and am trying out the Triband features. In the areas where my carrier operated only 900Mhz towers, I could not get connected.

1800Mhz works but 900Mhz does not. And my phone shows the 900/1800 option.

So from the practical experience I can conclude that its true that AT&T did request Motorola for a special version of the phone. The ones with the 900Mhz disabled in the hardware. Or it could be, that the firmware update may enable the option but the software bits needed to run the 900 radio is not present in the firmware.

And it also explains "1.8/1.9" in the label underneath the battery (next to the "MPx200" word).

Or so I was led to believe. :D

Believe it or not, I bought ROM from every seller on E-Bay :-) Four of them. They were all the same version.

There may be a special ROM, I guess in restricted circulation, which may enable the 900 band.

The one I have didnt work. I can say it for sure.

- I spoke with the Carrier support to clarify the frequency.
- I had MPx200, Dev Kit smartphone (Red-E), SE T68i and an Old Nokia 5110 (single band only 900Mhz)
- The carrier that claimed to be on 900Mhz worked with all phones except MPx200 (even though the selection in the settings was on 900/1800)

I guess from reading other forums, I found that the firmware update works for some and doesnt for the others. And there is no clear reason as to why it is that way :-(

So the hardware is present, it is the 900 radio software that is not behaving.
