Some people seem to think that this is detailing what we've been calling the MPx220, but I have to disagree with that. It looks to me like this is really the <a href="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4163">Motorola i930</a> which we <a href="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4165">posted about</a> back in October. Compare for yourselves: the grainy image below is what was recently leaked to MPx200.org and the color computer renderings are what we uncovered a few months ago.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/i930.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/><img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/mpx2a1.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /> <br />Unfortunately for us, the i930 is not expected to be launched until the end of next year but the good news is that it will be from Nextel, giving customers of yet another mobile operator access to the Smartphone platform.

The specs show it as a quad band GSM/GPRS device. Wouldn't that make it more likely to be the MPx220 than the i930? I'd assume they might have similar form factors but this looks the the 200 replacement to me.

Plus the fact that the "MPx.2" specs were found on a T-MOBILE server.

Oh I am... we've got some cool software running the site that lets us type up stories and set the date/time when that story will appear on the front page. I just queued up a few things earlier in the week so you could satifsfy that undeniable Smartphone Thoughts craving during Christmas ;)

Looks like they removed the file. It was a presentation by motoroalla of their new phones. Here's the info at msmobiles:

I was wrong though, the pdf does call it MPX220.

Quad Band GSM phone vs. CDMA, Nextel phone? I think we are looking at 2 different phones. Besides, the Nextel phone doesn't have that big metal hinge that the MPx200 and the MPx.2 has...I know that production models versus prototypes can be different, but these look like totally different phones to me....

what are you talking about? the mpx.2 doc says its a quad band gsm/gprs phone... not cdma. Same as the mpx200, which is tri-band, but with 850mhz.

Why no bluetooth and WAP 2.0, not to mention EDGE (although no EDGE is more understandable).

Just to be precise, Nextel isn't GSM or CDMA. They use iDEN, Motorola's proprietary TDMA-based protocol. That's why Nextel sells only Motorola phones. BTW, Motorola has a completely separate division (http://www.motorola.com/iden) handling such phones.

i called the nextel store (in ill.) and they said that the i900 has no camera and the i930 has a camera, they both run the ms smartphone os, and were to be released soon. There were some production problems with a lot of nextel phones, and the i900 and i930 will be release in june 2004. The i8xx will be released in late winter/early spring '04. The i8xx will not be a smartphone.

I will say good bye to my pocket pc and my i95cl when the i930 arrives.

I'm wondering if this will be released to T-Mobile to allow them to do their testing and build their applications early 04 rather than to public... If that is the case we (the US) won't see the phone availble until somtime in late 04... I am so ready for this phone to hit the streets - I have a motorola P280 now which I am using on T-Mobile - no complaints about T-Mo but I can't wait to dump that phone...
