<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.engadget.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.engadget.com/</a><br /><br /></div>Last week, David wrote about AttachSmart - a new freeware utility that lets you easily attach files to emails you send from your Smartphone. Like most freeware, this only works on devices that are not "locked". This is because developers must pay a significant fee to a 3rd party in order for their devices to be "digitally signed" and enabled to run on locked devices. Some operators, such as Orange, have chosen to lock their devices for security reasons - if a program acts malicously, they will have no problem tracking down the programmer and holding them responsible for any damages. Since developers creating freeware are not making money off of their product, they typically will not want to <i>spend</i> money to get their application digitally signed. PocketTV, the makers of AttachSmart, have a solution for this: owners of unlocked devices can download and use a free version and owners of locked devices can pay a small fee for a digitally signed version of the application. This offsets their costs and allows the greatest number of people to use their software.AttachSmart has now been split into two editions with the exact same features. The $4.99 <a href="http://www.smartphone.net/smartphonethoughts/software_detail.asp?id=358">Signature Edition</a> will run on locked devices and the free <a href="http://www.smartphone.net/software_detail.asp?id=332">Classic Edition</a> will run on all others.

That's correct.

Robert didn't mention another interesting feature of AttachSmart: It's the first Self-Replicating Smartphone application :). No, it is not a virus, but it is capable of sending itself (by email) to your Smartphone-enabled friends.

We'll get about $2-3 net per copy of AttachSmart Signature Edition sold (after you deduce the royalties from Handango or Smartphone.NET and the tax we must pay to the US federal government and to Arnold Schwarzenegger and the -bankrupt- state of California).

This ain't gonna make us millionaire, but we figure it's an acceptable price for a nice little application that does something useful.

Hopefuly AttachSmart will be eventually bundled by some Wireless Carriers! (it would certainely be in their interest to bundle Smartphone applications that encourage the user to use more data bandwidth!)

Please note that AttachSmart Classic (free) (http://www.smartphone.net/software_detail.asp?id=332) and AttachSmart Signature Edition (http://www.smartphone.net/software_detail.asp?id=358) are only for PERSONAL USE.

Enterprise users are not allowed to use those products (they could be liable for damages / breach of license). Enterprise users must use AttachSmart Enterprise Edition (available soon).

The official website for AttachSmart is:
