Switching from At&t to T-Mobile

I have read several posts that talk about unlocking the phone and then using t-mobile. How do you handle the cancelation fee for breaking the contract. I am unhappy with ATT but love the phone. Is there a simple way to do switch without paying a lot to ATT.

The only time you can break the contract without penalty is within 30 days of receiving your phone, or if you are migrating to another service (i.e., from GSM to TDMA and vice versa).
