The FCC order is intended to provide guidance to wireline and mobile carriers on "intermodal" porting of phone numbers. In most cases, wireline carriers operating in the 100 largest metropolitan areas have to support intermodal number porting by November 24, the FCC said in a statement Monday."

This would be great. I have several friends who are considering a move like this. And I've been giving it some thought too, since I don't need a dial-up connection for Internet access. That was about the only thing still holding me back from dropping my wired phone.

We've had this for several years here in Norway.

And the GSM-coverage is so good, that I haven't had a wired phone for three years now, and I've never missed it!

I've even replaced the plug in the wall, so only xDSL can use it ;-)
