In the mean time, Neil Cowburn has taken one item off our to-do list by posting a great summary of the new features being planned for version 2 of the .NET Compact Framework. There is some awesome stuff in the works so I highly recommend that all developers read it over carefully and start thinking about what they can do with it. For example, one of the first ideas that popped into my head is that the native "Runtime Hosting" feature could be used to develop powerful Home screen plugins with .NET. 8)

Neil also points out that the PowerPoint slides for all of the PDC sessions are now available for free download from Microsoft.

Now if they could just release .NET for the 2002 platform! I cannot believe that they have left users with the 2002 version in the cold. Here they are pushing .NET for the smartphone and the newest phone on the market (mpx200) doesn't even support it. Absolutely terrible!

Oh, bother! Here we go again...

<MyOpinion>
Smartphone 2002 will soon be deprecated, and MS will tone down the levels of support for that version of the platform in favour of Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone. Moan as much as you like, MS have no plans to support the .NET Compact Framework on Smartphone 2002. Anyways, the really exciting times will come with .NET Compact Framework 2.0, but we'll ALL have to wait until, um, Summer '04 (at the earliest) for that.
