What are your thoughts on this issue, what is the perfect amount of RAM or should you just get as much as you can afford regardless of need?</p>

I'm in the "Max it out" crowd ... 4GB on my MacBook Air, and 8GB on my MacBook Pro. My late and lamented 27-inch iMac had 8GB, although OWC claimed that 16GB would work. That being said, this works for me as long as RAM stays affordable. ( I remember back in, oh, 1977, when I worked at The Federal Reserve Bank in SF and 1/2 megabyte of memory for a mainframe system was about $100K. )
