This high-performance, power efficient processor integrates Intel XScale technology with Intel On-Chip Flash memory and Intel Micro Signal Architecture, jointly developed with Analog Devices, Inc., delivers class-leading performance, with industry-leading headroom to support computation-intensive voice and data applications for mainstream mobile phones."<br /><br />In addition to having a GSM/GPRS processor right on the chip, these bad boys can run at up to 312 MHz and include 4 MB of Flash memory. Other features of the chip allow manufacturers to include all sorts of other technologies in their devices.<br /><br />According to the spec sheet, it supports "SIM, UART, USB, I2C, SPI, SSP, Digital Audio Interface, MultiMediaCard, Secure Digital Card, Sony Memory Stick, Dallas 1-Wire Interface, keypad, PWM D/A, JTAG" and has interfaces for Bluetooth, IrDA, GPS and digital camera peripherals.

The PXA800F is pretty dull...

...compared to the BIG news yesterday, which was the PXA800EF! It's Intel's first EDGE XScale chip. EDGE is 3x faster then GPRS, and all three major GSM carriers in the U.S. will be launching it nationwide within the next 6 months.

The combination of EDGE and Smartphone is HUGE! It will finally match true high-speed data with an OS that can make the most of it, and vice-versa. Live streaming video is just the beginning... :rock on dude!:

This very cool! But let's not underestimate the PXA800F. We can assume that it can make devices smaller. Having a cell phone/watch/necklace is potentially around the corner. Plus if you have Bluetooth or Voice recognition, the future is here.

EDGE is awesome though. Does this mean that the SPV2 will not be able to take advantage of this technology? I'm getting the SPV2, no doubts there. But it would be cool to use the SPV2 with EDGE and a Pocket PC.

Microsoft built the OS to be radio-independant, so all you'd need would be an Edge software radio stack...but if it's compatible with GPRS, you might not need any changes at all (I don't know enough about Edge to know for sure). You would, of course, need to have Edge hardware inside the device as well. ;-)
