SCH-i600: Smartphone 2002 or Windows Mobile 2003

Ok - we all know the i600 has been shown with Smartphone 2002 operating system. Now that it appears to be scheduled for a September release with Verizon, will it still have the Smartphone 2002 OS or is there a chance it could have Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphones?

I don't think that a new OS would require any sort of recertification from the FCC. Other phones being released around that time frame are claiming to have WM2003, and it doesn't appear that Samsung has been manufacturing the i600, so there are no large inventories.

My hunch is that it will be SP2002. I really, really hope I'm wrong, but it's not the FCC certification that slows things down - it's the carrier testing. New OS, new huge timeframe for testing... :cry:

I was just checking on the Exchange 2003 details and it specifies that you need Windows Mobile 2003 devices to take advantage of the new notification sync capabilities. It sounds like the i600 misses out on this feature.

Can anyone tell me if it will be possible to set a sync schedule on the i600 (with the 2002 OS) so I can have the phone periodically check my Exchange 2003 mailbox?

2002 lets you set the interval at which it synchronizes. It's a bit rudimentary, but it gets the job done.

Thanks Robert. If I set an aggressive sync schedule (say every 5 minutes), will it use up my data minutes if there are no updates from the server (is there any packet traffic during the "empty" sync)?

Yes - the device still has to contact the server to ask if there are any updates.

Thanks again, Robert. As impatient as I have been to get a CDMA smartphone here in the US I'll probably still jump onboard as soon as the i600 is released. But I will be anxiously anticipating the first Windows Mobile SmartPhone 2003 device that Verizon releases so I can take advantage of the notification sync in Exchange. It really is a shame how long Verizon takes to test new phones. I understand their desire to release stable hardware, but it shouldn't take THIS long to do so. :evil:

Here's hoping they go Moto before another year goes by!

Anything new on whether or not Verizon will release the i600? There is no mention of it (that I can find) on their website.
