It's still a small market, but Microsoft is working hard to bring ODM/OEMs on board. Samsung announced their comittment to bring a Smartphone running Windows Mobile to market quite some time ago, but like many things in the Smartphone world, the process is taking a while.<br /><br />The Samsung device looks like it could seriously rock - I've seen some "2nd generation" devices that are fast, responsive, and have built-in cameras. I can't wait to see what comes out this year! The link above goes to an older infoSync article on the i600 - I had a hard time finding new information on it, but I've emailed my PR contact at Samsung so hopefully I can dig up something new on it.

Ahh, the i600. Perhaps the most anticipate device of recent times. It's been on, and it's been off. Of late it appears to be back on, but as the SPH-i600, which would make it for Sprint.

For those of us who are dependent on Verizon let's hope that the SCH-i600 is released. According to Phonescoop it's tentatively going to be released this month, though I'm skeptical.

Anybody here go to TechEd recently and want to report what they saw or heard re the SPH-i600? It might appease those of us who are trying to patiently wait for a Smartphone.

When I asked at Tech Ed, a Samsung rep told me it would be about 6 months before this comes out. It's a really sweet device, but can you stand to wait that long?

This phone would almost definitely get me to switch to Verizon from AT&T if it only had Bluetooth!! I just wish it did!!!

Well it does have SDIO so you can add in a bluetooth card.

For the love of all things big and small!! I want this thing more than any other device I've coveted the past few years. Can I stand to wait 6 months? Given the fact that I don't have a choice, sure. My only real dilemma is what phone to get with Verizon in the mean time (since I am switching off Nextel as soon as I can decide).

The smartphone is my ultimate device - I already manage an Exchange server at work and will be upgrading to 2003 to take advantage of the MIS capabilities. Can't wait to get my e-mail on my cell phone in <almost> REAL TIME! Throw in the ability to sync contacts, tasks and appointments with a small device that I take EVERYWHERE (unlike my PPC which oftentimes stays at home) and I'll be in gadget heaven with Jason. ;)

It's not the same though... you'd have something sticking out... and the integration is never quite what it's supposed to be.... On another note... anybody know if/when we will see Smartphone 2003 or am i behind the times and it has already been announced....:?:

Six months? Even with Verizon involved it's hard to imagine that it could take a year and a half from FCC approval to hitting the market. Unfortunately only Verizon offers the network coverage that I require, so I'm stuck. I have given serious consideration to the Kyo 7135, but I'm really not very interested in going back to Palm and I'd really rather have a phone with the added data functionality rather than a phone with a Palm shoved in.

In the end I guess I'll wait and Verizon will get my money later rather than sooner.

6 months for which carrier?

The i600 has appeared on Verizon's roadmap for launch this summer. 6 months is absurdly long in this industry. You would think there would be a clamor to be first to market in the USA. Wouldn't you?

Yeah... you would think so... I'm just reporting what they said at the both though. Hopefully it isn't very accurate.

how does the Samsung phone compare to the Mitac?

http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?id=278

as I am a current Tmobile (PPC:PE) user, I find myself waiting for the GPRS Mitac to make it's way overseas. so the longer the I-600 is delayed, the better for me (so i don't run out and buy it instead!)

Jason - any new info from Samsung or Verizon? If you can't say because of NDA, I'd appreciate it if you would indicate that rather than simply replying negatively.

My fear about the i600 is that every day that goes by, there may be more pressure to postpone the launch so that it is initially released with Windows Mobile 2003 rather than Smartphone 2002. I've no idea if the phone would be upgradeable from one OS to the next, but for what it's worth, I'd buy the i600 with Smartphone 2002 today even knowing that Windows Mobile may be available by year end.

Why the delay? Is it a Samsung issue? A Verizon issue? A Microsoft issue? An issue issue? It's been nearly a year since FCC approval. Who is the roadblock here?

Isn't Microsoft chomping at the bit to get a Smartphone launched in North America? I know I am.

FWIW...I stopped by a local VZW store near work this afternoon. I asked the Owner for an update on the i600 from Samsung. He said late August.

We shall see. That is the first time he gave me a date range...he always kept saying that it has been delayed.
